1487498 2022-07-22 03:40:00 Re Waihejke We went to and from Wiaheke by Hydrafoil - Does anyone know why that form of Hydrafoil was replaced ?

It was not replaced, exactly. It was taken out of service as Kerridge who owned the hydrofoil had an argument about the manning with the union (as Ken said) so Kerridge took it out of the water, which was a blow for the islanders as the Baroona took about 90 minutes to make the trip whereas the hydrofoil made the same trip in about 20 minutes.

As I recall, the argument was that Kerridge thought the hydrofoil (the Manawai) only needed one person on the bridge where the union said it needed two. They could not come to an agreement so that was the end of that.

It must have cost Kerridge quite a few pennies to get the hydrofoil running as it was nowhere near as high as the Baroona so needed its own wharf, both at Waiheke and Auckland which was only a foot or two above the water. But then I suppose he was not broke.

1487499 2022-07-22 03:51:00 Surfdale, I think :( Yes the open sea have better and we used to go to them in a bus with a picnic lunch. Aaah, those were the days! Ken :)

When you talk about the bus, I remember them in the mid 60s as being very old.

There is a very steep hill just up the road from Palm Beach toward Matiatia (the main port) and the bus used to grind up the hill. Halfway up the hill was a Y intersection to a road on the right and the bus used to pull into there on one side of the Y, on the flat, to get up a bit more speed, then out the other side of the Y, so as to make it to the top. Thankfully in later years all the buses were replaced with more modern ones.

I “think” the Hydrofoil was 0wned by Bob Kerridge and used to ferry people to Pakatoa Island which he owned and had a 9 hole golf course.

Again I “think” fire ravaged the island and he disbanded the island and sold the Hydrafoil.

1487504 2022-07-23 22:55:00 The unions wanted 2 men on the bridge, Kerridge wanted one. neither would compromise. End of service! I remember it well.

Union/Management relations was at an all time low around that time. another couple of cases I remember from that era were...

1. Freezing works going on strike because they were given fish cakes for breakfast instead of fresh fish. (stormy weather had stopped the fishing boat putting to sea for previous week) and then another strike because the Management changed the colour of gumboots. (To stop theft if I remember correctly)

2. A carpet manufacturers staff wished to work 4 x 10hr days instead of 5 x 8hr days. Management said OK, the Union then said they had to be paid the 2 extra daily hours at overtime rates. management rightly said no!

Funny old world in those days

Ken

Back in the 1950's, I had to drive the work Bedford covered grocery truck from Dannevirke to either Foxton or Himitangi beach for the yearly outing.

Have a photo of the picnic spot, somewhere in the archives

ps. petrol back then was 3 pence per gallon, use an old athletics club large journal and still plenty of pages to record our cars' records.
