1486895 2022-07-09 02:44:00 In 1975 I took a trip on The India Pacific train from Perth. On Beamafilm.com and also at library DVD is that trip -2010.
Quite a few changes from when i did it. I was going to Adelaide and had to get off at (I think Port Augusta) and catch a railcar to Adelaide. There was a derailment so we stopped at Cook -made me understand those wide brimmed hats with dangling corks-so hot and so many flies..
The 2010 film mentions that many places such as Cook have been bypassed due to automation and now the train detours to Adelaide then returns to where I detrained then continues to Sydney(Redfern) 4375km.
Has some long no bends sections -more than 100km Lots of safety controls to ensure Train Driver does not fall asleep.

1486896 2022-07-21 00:56:00 A fact that I thought you would find interesting:

A steam engine only uses about 7% to 8% of the energy in its fuel to move the engine whereas a two stroke diesel is 40% to 50% and it was because the diesel engine is so reliable, so fuel efficient and could be operated by so few people that it ended the age of steam.

That does not diminish my love of steam engines, though.:)

1486898 2022-09-16 19:49:00 The London to Greenwich railway opened in 1836. It was built by 400 navvies. London, even then, was very crowded and there was no room to build an overland railway so they built the railway on a viaduct which is nearly 4 miles long and has 878 arches. It is the longest span of arches in Britain. It consists of 60 million bricks and used up London's supply of bricks. It is one of London's biggest structures and by 1844 it was carrying 2 million passengers a year. It was the first entirely elevated railway and the first to be built specifically for passengers. (Up until then the railways carried mainly freight.) It is still in use today.

Thanks for the link, Roscoe.

We drove passed that site by less than 1km in 2002 when we were on our West Coast odyssey.

So sad that we missed it :(
