1154115 2010-11-18 03:41:00 Am doing a computer for a client, and seeking your perusal and advice.

Computers usage: to run small home business, and watch movies. Customer wants TB drive for movie storage, reasonably quick at what it does, and will be able to run a small home based business

My proposed componentry:

CPU - Phenom X2 550
(www.ascent.co.nz) Motherboard - Asus M4ATD-M (www.ascent.co.nz) with integrated graphics
RAM - Corsair 2 X 2GB (www.ascent.co.nz)
Harddrive - Seagate 1000GB Barracuda (www.ascent.co.nz)
Optical Drive - Asus BC-08B1LT (www.ascent.co.nz) Blu-ray reader

Now... am unsure of PSU. Thinking of Silverstone ST50F-ES (www.ascent.co.nz). These any good?

Case/Keyboard/Mouse - use existing
Monitor - customer to decide whether to use existing after I give him quote

Software - apart from Office, am a bit unsure what I should add.

Advice please. Also, its been a while ... this is all compatible? Have I missed anything?
Also, too powerful? This will need to last a few years

1154116 2010-11-18 03:51:00 yes, seems fine.

The motherboard has a pci-e 16 slot so they can add graphics later if they want to.
Integrated is fine for desktop and watching movies.

Will you be setting the computer up for them and installing windows? If so, are you going to set the default user account to an administrator or standard user?

1154117 2010-11-18 03:56:00 The components all look good. You don't need a PSU anywhere near that powerful, a good 350w would run it easily.

One of those maybe?

Not that there is any problem with getting a 500w PSU, it's just that you aren't going to be even half using it most of the time, so you could save a few $$ there. You're going to put win7 x64 on there I hope? :)

1154118 2010-11-18 04:50:00 If you're going with a blu ray drive for movies, make sure their current monitor is high def 16x9 (pref 1080p), otherwise theyre wasting money on an unnessecary bluray drive. jareemon (5207)
1154119 2010-11-18 05:50:00 Customer wants 2 quotes, one based on Windows 7, and the other based on XP. Either way there will be an admin account on there which I will have password protected

I wasn't sure about the PSU wattage, I just figured 500W would be safe. Good to know I can go lower. Enermax is a brand I know and trust too :)

As for the monitor vs Blu-ray drive, that was something I had overlooked. Thank you

Slight problem there - you cant buy XP OEM any more, its discontinued. There may be some places that still have the Odd copy. The price differance anyway , if you could still buy XP is not even worth worrying about compared to Windows 7.

AND if you want the PC to last a few years, by April 2014 there wont even be any more security updates for XP -why go backwards ?

1154121 2010-11-18 07:41:00 The monitor needs to be HDCP compliant for blu-ray, the integrated gpu will be. jackM (14814)

Ofcourse, hadn't thought of that...

As for the OS, Win7 is definitly the way to go, it has media center (if you get home premium or higher) which would be great for the customer's movie collection. They may also be interested in a Media Center remote (www.amazon.com)

1154123 2010-11-18 17:34:00 Customer already has own Windows XP Home CD

I didn't know when MS was discontinuing support of XP - Thank you for that info

1154124 2010-11-18 18:47:00 actually to playback movies onboard graphics may not be up to the task, a good graphics chipset can take the load almost completely off the cpu for this but few onboard cipsets have been up it to date (some now are). May just pay to check how well that board handles blu-ray.

Of course the cpu can probably do it, just means a large cpu load during movies.

And a beefy psu does give them the option to put in a decent graphics card later if they suddenly decide to play games :)
