887036 2010-05-26 12:01:00 I can completely see where the anti hoon people are coming from, I just think that its a little unfair to say that they are to blame just cos they bought aftermarket wheels for their car.

I had a similar incident to prefect, except I was sober. Driving to Akaroa, coming over the top of the hill just past the pub and hit a patch of gravel which some idiot had most likely spat out onto the road from the car park. I've done a fair bit of gravel driving so caught it sorta. Still spun right around but kept it on my side of the road and on the road. This was in an old 323, by no means a fast car. If I hadnt had previous experience it could of gotten very messy.

And no one can predict a patch of gravel on the road just over the lip of a hill

887038 2010-05-26 12:15:00 Yes but it wouldnt be easy to just go buy one thats stll in one piece now would it. 323 first car and budget of $600. 1984 I think it was, lasted a good while though. But killed it once I got my commy, gearbox when poof hueybot3000 (3646)
887039 2010-05-26 12:34:00 When I first got my drivers licence at 15 my Dad gave me the best advice I ever heard from him.

"Treat everyone else on the road as if they are idiots."

I never ever forgot that. It's possibly why I'm still alive to be an annoyance today.

887040 2010-05-26 19:38:00 sorry kenj but while your driving may sound perfect, you drive around here for any length of time you will loose the back end, front, do more emergency stops and swerves than you ever want to do. and that is with carefull driving.
wet slippery off camber roads filled with idiot drivers, you learn to dodge really quick.

What is so special about "here." Is the "winterless north" a bit like the "idiot belt" in the USA? Do you think we don't have that here in Hawkes Bay?? We have our fair % of retards behind the wheel here - like anywhere.

I had 10 of my 52 years of driving in Auckland, 3 of those years driving a 10 ton delivery truck around central Auckland. I did a defensive driving course early in the 70's and that was the best thing I ever did.

Accidents happen, but you can reduce the odds by knowing what to do and when to do it.

Sweep's dad had the right idea!

887041 2010-05-26 21:11:00 Trucks are wonder things, You soon learn to reduce momentum 200m before a line of stopped traffic, rather then approaching in a manner that you end up jumping on the brakes, locking the wheels, and sliding into the opposite lane.

Seriously, if someone does that they have made a major error, Its not the road or conditions at fault, I'm not impressed that they didn't impact with anything, I'm just blown away I share the road with people who pull such cunning stunts and I hope that one day such driving from others doesn't get me killed.:stare:

887042 2010-05-26 23:40:00 And your sayin that its ok for the 40-50 y/o's to drive a little faster cos they have the experience? I'm not a fan of boyracers, they make everyone who enjoys their car look bad.

I myself am not the best driver (legally speaking) but Im probaly better off in some cases than say a 40 y/o woman whos never lost control of her car. At least I would have some clue on how to recover

I'm saying as a driver of 30 years who as undertaken performance driving courses in the UK, that I and others of my experience are not in the same boat as boy racers.
We are far better able to handle an out of control car than younger drivers.

hueybot3000 is quiet right in that most people just do not get taught and do not get the practice. when an incident happens they simply do not have the skills required, they are an unfortunate victim. while those with the skills and practice get to live.

a good example.....i was coming down the hill (not steep), wet road, taking it easy. come up to the corner, the traffic in front was stopped, so on the brakes, heaps of room but one wheel locks right up and with the camber and bumps in the road shoots me across toward the the other side. a quick off brakes and pull it in and back on for a full stop. no ABS, no stability control.

edit: hooning is not practicing defensive driving in any way. that gets you into trouble not out of it.

LOL, you should of been use the engine to brake!, not the tyres...LOL

"here" is a little bit different, i drive 5 of the top 10 most dangerous roads in NZ on a regular basis . they are not dangerous because of the road, its just the drivers .

"Treat everyone else on the road as if they are idiots . " is exactly right .

Hawkes Bay just doesn't have the population . i can have more traffic on a gravel back road than your state highway . the last few trips down south i probably had more traffic between towns (20min drive sh1) here than between Ngaruawahia and Whanganui (4-5 hour drive sh39-4))

but my main point is you are always going to "loose it" sometime . no one drives for long without sliding it at some stage . if you havn't "lost it" then you havn't been driving for long .

unfortunately i think a lot of people don't actually realize that they have been sliding around . ignorance is bliss . . . . . until it gets them killed .

i'm a little lucky due to country gravel roads, your aways sliding around . putting in correction in is just 2nd nature you don't even think about it .

Buy a Holden so they can check your airbag control unit when it happens :P
