Would say this Budget today is what National will be judged on,time for some radical change/closing loopholes and making people more responsible for their own outcomes/actions (crime/drink driving).

Perhaps Pete Hodgson was right with his "Wassssup" badges (what the hell was that for)

885865 2010-05-20 07:05:00 sigh......... i dont understand politics very much at all, but i am disappointed at some of the budget things they have said.... such as the education sector : early childhood funding for up to 80% fully qualified registered teacher thing............
my centre is in the top 10 of the centres of the country to complete the 100% qualified registered teachers........... and we worked hard to get there and now our funding is going to be cut........ sigh.... but we will still have to do the same work with less $$$

and then i looked at the tax cuts or whatever ya call it, worked it out on that site beehive budget tax guide........... and for some reason it says i will get more back? i thought id get more tax taken off but maybe i did it wrong......
so take a ECE teachers wage, add 2 children, and WFF and i get money back.... we mite be able to get icecream every week then not just once a month? :p

sigh......

confusing......

Don't need to understand much, really.

Just need to understand that if you're not rich, you're screwed!

885867 2010-05-21 02:53:00 Me thinks it was a good effort.
There is no free lunch.

I think welfare needs to be tightened up. I personally think that single mothers or fathers need to think again that it's their responsibility and be encouraged back to the workforce. I support the student loan changes, if you don't pass, really should you be allowed to get a student loan? If you already spent 6 or 7 years full time do you really need more student loans to study more undergraduate? If you wanna study more go for postgraduate or specialist training (and get the loan).

I don't think you can cut out property investment, that's what people choose to do and feel comfortable with. That's their choice. I liked how top tax bracket comes down to 33%, trust is still 30% afaik, isn't LAQC done at the company tax rate (now 28%).

28 is less than 33.
Me thinks down the road they should align company rates (and trusts) with top individual tax rates. So you get rid of that tax minimisation.

I like WFF changes etc .. like that. Seriously should you gear yourself so highly to get Working for family / Student allowances (for the children) and whatever there is.

I would like to put a age cap on student loan. If you are 60yrs should you get student loan when retirement age is just round the corner? How you gonna pay that back? Are you gonna get a job with that qualification? Or is this just milking the tax payers for early retirement. The course is paid, the books and travel and bus costs are paid for, the living cost are also paid for to help your food and rent and utlility cost, hey thanks tax payers. Then time for retirement  for more money.

885868 2010-05-21 03:16:00 For years the Reserve Bank governors have said for NZ investors to stop investing in rental houses. It artificially inflates demand and puts the housing market out of kilter.
The numbnut investors took absolutely zero, zilch, diddly squat, bugger all notice and the other reason is its a tax rort. I know people who are going to get their ass fried when the tax write downs disappear. Now we hear them whinging its times like these when I think a god could exist because its so good.
Good to see National sorted it out.

885869 2010-05-21 08:23:00 And you want people to invest their money where?? Finance companies or stock market. May as well invest it in the TAB or the like. Housing is still the best investment my far in NZ.. paulw (1826)
