1153932 2010-11-18 09:36:00 If its in windows now, go to device manager and see if the hdd or dvd (under IDE / ATA / ATAPI controllers), or both are running in PIO mode. If one or both are, thats your prob (why its slow) Speedy Gonzales (78)
1153933 2010-11-18 09:39:00 Also after doing that you might want to run sfc /scannow in a command prompt. Snorkbox (15764)
1153934 2010-11-18 09:39:00 Where do i look for PIO?

im in device manager, and have clicked on its properties. which tab do i look at?

Both of them also have "Enable writing cache" ticked. is this normal?

1153935 2010-11-18 09:41:00 Not to sure if this will have any effect or not -- Disconnect the Slave HDD, Power and IDE ribbon. Disconnect the Slave optical drive Power and ribbon.

So you have 1 HDD ( with the OS) and only 1 optical Drive. Start it up and notice if there is any increase in speed - or if the Audio plays the same or not.

It's possible the PSU may not be supplying enough power.

Keep in mind, some of these parts are considered old and finding new replacements will be almost impossible. 3-5 years is considered the life expectancy of most PC components.

Some last longer, some dont even make 3 years. For an ECS board to last this long (6 years) is something of a miracle ;)

1153936 2010-11-18 09:43:00 3 to 5 years last?

I have an old pc thats nearly as old as me (im 14 and this thing is nearly that old) and it runs incredibly fast on its 192mb ram and 300mhz cpu and old trio 64 pci video card.

Oh, im thinking of getting a new motherboard. do motherboards still support ddr400 ram?

Advanced settings (under IDE / ATA / ATAPI controllers) / IDE channel. It'll either be on DMA or PIO

1153938 2010-11-18 09:45:00 I have a 20gig pata from 1999 that's still going :D jareemon (5207)
1153939 2010-11-18 09:51:00 device 0 is in ultra dma mode 5

device 1 current transfer mode is pio

So should i change device 1 to DMA? its already on "DMA if availible"

1153940 2010-11-18 09:53:00 That'll be one reason why its slow one of them is on PIO Speedy Gonzales (78)
1153941 2010-11-18 10:10:00 Nobody has stopped to check if you actually have enough space on your C drive.
Relying on D for space is no good if C is almost full. Your page file typically takes up 1.5x RAM size from your C drive - does it actually have enough space to 'breathe"?
