885842 2010-05-19 00:05:00 National is governing in a recession biggest since 1929 Labor would have made things much worse because of their commy tendencies.

lol bit harsh

In better times when the Gov books were in the black, NZ should have restructured its tax system esp for business, and investing in infrastructure over simply giving money away with 'Working for families' and many other social schemes (often thanks to MMP promises).

The country is effectively a business, if its doing well it can afford social schemes to help the less fortunate, over having to borrow to fund them which bites us in the ass down he track ie Greece.

That is because people see that the 'rich' get a larger amount of tax cuts each week. They don't realise the rich pay more tax in the first place.

After traveling overseas and coming back to NZ, I'm a bit disappointed with the whole 'lets punish the rich' mentality here. Yea sure, punish the blue chip guy for taking a holiday while the investors in his company are left with nothing.
But why the anger on the people who have worked hard to lift themselves into higher income brackets? Keep sipping that hatorade...

885844 2010-05-19 01:37:00 The funny thing is there's a HUGE outcry when one area of the country has to pay like 1c per-litre more than the rest of the country for fuel.

Yet when one echelon has to pay significantly higher taxes, they're slammed for crying foulplay?

It's a jealousy thing - and symptomatic of the "tall poppy syndrome" which is rife in New Zealand.

Egalitarianism is one thing, but the concept that everyone should earn the same (or low) wages for doing different jobs smacks of communism.

Bus drivers should not earn the same as doctors - why would anyone study for 5 + years become a doctor to earn the same money as someone who can get a passenger endorsement on their driver's licence after a few weeks practice? (I'm not getting at bus drivers here - just using them as an example).

Why should someone who has attempted to improve their family's financial position (legally) pay a greater percentage of their earnings in tax than someone who has just cruised through life?

885845 2010-05-19 01:40:00 The thing that iritates me with all of this is that any sense of fairness goes straight out of the window.

Consider this.

I have made sacrifices all of my life to get where I am today. I put myself through higher education (parents - large family - could not afford it). I own a home in a good area (largish mortgage). I take nothing from the govt - even though we have a family. I also elect to pay private health insurance. And I have my own secondary super scheme. In almost everything I do, I am less of a burden on 'the system' because of the circumstances I am in - but I got here through making sacrifices to achieve a goal. However - like most kiwis, I have to budget to make ends meet, and we sometimes struggle from payday to payday - as costs keep rising. And I don't smoke, have sky, or do a lot of the things that some people now seem to see as "necessities".

Even under a flat tax rate, I would pay more than the average kiwi because of my income. Yet I consume less resource than the majority. I have no issue with this. A flat tax rate is fair.

But why should I pay an elevated rate when I already pay more tax than the majority - and I consume the least of the resources I pay for? That is not fair. It is no wonder people in my position do consider going offshore for better lifestyle! The tax cuts are fair. For our family they will mean a lot - we're like most of you, we don't have excess.

What most of the naysayers have to consider is that a lot of the people who will be recipients of the tax cuts are not "rich f&%kers" - we are ordinary kiwis. And at least with National I have some chance of equality. Under labour there was never any chance.

And stop with the pretense that we can afford to pay more - we already do!

885846 2010-05-19 02:03:00 IMO the problem is not the people hiding their income in comapanies and trusts (legal) but the people ripping the system in terms of DPB while in a relationship, cash workers, ACC ripoffs, etc (all illegal). Fix that and we all get lower taxes again. wotz (335)
885847 2010-05-19 02:16:00 Alrighty, all you hard working high-income people, can you please get back to work, Someone has to pay for my mortgage and internet.

It may as well be you.

Personally I think they should increase tax on all the fat cats, then I could afford SkyTV.

885848 2010-05-19 02:38:00 Isn't there a saying or old proverb that goes something along the lines of:

"The rich get richer, and the poor get poorer".

But we voted a National government in, what more did we really expect?

Sorry but how ignorant can you get?

Under the so-called socialist Labour govt (aka the 'working man's party') - the rich really did get richer and the poor really did get poorer. For some reason, hard core Labour supporters are blind to this.

885850 2010-05-19 02:56:00 I'll offer an extra $20 a week if they execute all the rapists and murderers.

Wait, that would save us billions.....
