1153922 2010-11-18 07:26:00 You didnt say it doesnt boot into windows. All you said was the screen goes black. Which can mean anything. Remove the hdd and scan it Speedy Gonzales (78)
1153923 2010-11-18 07:38:00 It is not the hard drive.
How do you know this for certain?

1153924 2010-11-18 07:44:00 What make of HDD is it ?

We know its a new Drive, BUT it can be faulty or developed a fault - go to the vendors site and download the drive testing software, normally a ISO or program that will make a Bootable CD -- run it through the drive in the long test modes.

"IF" ( and I'm only saying "IF") the drive has a fault it may have corrupted your data, all the fixes in the world wont fix that.

Defragging more than likely wont do any good what so ever - I'd be VERY surprised if the boot problem is caused by a defragmented HDD.

HDD's, even new ones can and DO fail at any time. Just two weeks ago I had a brand new WD 1TB Black serious spit the dummy after 3 days of use in a customers new PC. Along with another WD 500GB drive starting to sound very Suspect on a workshop PC with "strange" slowness sometimes (4 months old) as in you can hear the drive straining when it slows.

Test it, even to eliminate or confirm it.

1153925 2010-11-18 07:52:00 Perhaps this thread may throw a little more light on the situation?

Or not as the case maybe.

I suspect the the WD160 is not a new drive anyway as you can buy WD250 gig for another $20 anyway at Ascent for example.

1153926 2010-11-18 07:57:00 Defragging never hurts :p

Ah, so it could be corrupt data from the old drive...

1153928 2010-11-18 08:09:00 i've tried installing windows on other drives. i think its my motherboard.

though im about to try another power supply.

Could my power cord be the problem? the power cord going into the power supply is very old (The cord is at least 18 years old).

Should i try a newer power cord?

try replacing every part you have at your disposal.
if youve tried another drive and it still didnt work, and a different power supply doesnt help, then it's almost certainly the motherboard

1153930 2010-11-18 08:18:00 Could be a PSU not giving enough power and corrupting the drive.

Keep in mind -- If you cant boot from a XP CD, then there is something stopping it ( stating the obvious :D ).

Maybe so theres No more Guess work:

Can you please list the parts - new / used / how old (Approx).

Motherboard --

RAM ---

HDD --

Power Supply ---

Optical drive -----

The first 4 if you have on-board Graphics is all you need to get a PC to boot into the BIOS, or even run if the OS is already loaded.

1153931 2010-11-18 09:24:00 Motherboard: KM400-M2. date bought - 2004 (this was our old family pc, b4 it was mine)

RAM - it originally had 256mb ram. that stick is long gone. it now has 2 512's which means 1gb

HDD- the main drive is a Western digital, its black. im unsure of its model. it's been hardly used.

- the second drive is a Seagate barracuda 160gb. i am usure of thats age. though it's not old and has been hardly used.

Power Supply - the one i just took out was an ICute ATX-320W/P4 which has screw off gold plated fan grills. from 2004

Optical Drive - the first one is a ASUS QUIETRACK from what it says on the front. its got light scribe.

my second drive is a BTC 16x writer. i am unsure of its model, but will find it out.

Video Card - ATI Radeon 9600 128mb. at least 6 years old. from a friend of my families who have had lots of troubles with pc's.

I will be replacing this video card as soon as i can.

I have got my pc running. the start up is still slow. im currently running using my onboard graphics to see if my video card is some of the problem.

edit: there is still some sound lagging, but its not as bad.

It's now my third time playing George Formby's When Im cleaning windows. and its only lagged a few times.

Its still an issue though.
