885211 2010-05-16 11:44:00 There's only a couple reasons that the sound on a TiVo could be better, one, maybe it just has to do with how it's been hooked up (HDMI or optical as opposed to composite), the other one is Sky compress the hell out of most every channel, it's like watchin bad youtube sometimes.

I give you answer.

885212 2010-05-16 22:28:00 True sky do compress the hell out of the sound im sure of that the picture isnt as bad on sky but when compared with freeview then freeview wins hands down. Hitech (9024)
885213 2010-05-16 22:48:00 Tivo only covers the free-to-air channels, no?

There is no way that you will be able to watch F1 on the cheap man's version of Sky - unless of course it is the edited hilights which appear a few days later.

885214 2010-05-17 11:12:00 So the alternatives are:

Tivo:

Pay a one-off payment of $720 (the new reduced price) and no ongoing costs (unless you use CASPA to download movie content)

OR

MySkyHDI:

Option 1
$99 joining fee per decoder
$15 rental for the MY SKY HDi unit per month (per decoder)
$10 per month HD access ticket

Option 2
$599 joining fee per decoder
No ongoing monthly rental for the MY SKY HDi unit
$10 per month HD access ticket

(Source ( . custhelp . com/cgi-bin/skytv . cfg/php/enduser/std_adp . php?p_faqid=127" target="_blank">skytv . custhelp . com))

If my maths is any good, that means (for MySkyHDI) either $99 the first year and $300p . a . thereafter, or $719 for the first year and $120 thereafter .

Both options are in addition to the normal Sky subscription .

The trade-off is the available content: free-to-air rubbish, or pay-TV rubbish (including some live sports that you may or may not be interested in) .

I know why I'm happy with my choice!

885215 2010-05-17 13:31:00 I recently bought a tivo and am very happy with it , Just want to know why is it that the sound is so much crisper and louder on all channels than what it is on mysky HDI.

Because Sky is an overpriced joke

885216 2010-05-17 22:09:00 You get what you pay for :)

In my case, I WANT to watch F1 motor racing in its entirety, and I also want to watch NASCAR.

Can I watch either with Tivo?

No.

Hence Mysky, HD, wide screen, home theatre etc etc

My choice :) :)

...for free! (correct me if I am wrong, but you can get most of those channels with Sky too, can't you? But you pay for the privilege...)

As you say, you make a personal choice... :)

885219 2010-05-17 22:49:00 Of course you get them on Sky.

But who in their right mind watches them? :) :)

Back to you ;)

885220 2010-05-17 23:06:00 You're right of course - most of those channels have a very small following (don't get me started on the taxpayer funding of Maori TV!).

We generally watch the main four - used to watch a lot of Prime, but since Sky will not provide an EPG for Prime for TiVo, we are boycotting Prime and watching the current Dr Who series online. Neener neener, Sky!
