887453 2010-05-23 09:00:00 I just don't understand what's going on on some auctions, such as the one I summarised below.
Can someone explain why a person would outbid themselves (hours later and by a large margin)?
They can't be shills, can they?
The reserve was $1....

$306.00 F
$301.00 E
$205.00 E
$200.00 D
$51.00 D
$50.00 C
$33.50 C
$32.50 B
$23.00 A
$21.50 A (bidder name)

cheers

887454 2010-05-23 09:04:00 They could have forgot to tick the auto bid box. rebels181 (14841)
887455 2010-05-23 09:12:00 What usually happens is someone else sets an autobid equal to or higher than someone else with an autobid.

For example:
$306.00 F
$301.00 E
$205.00 E

E would have had an autobid set up to $301. F placed an autobid for something over that - let's say $350, so when F hit "Bid", it would show the highest autobid from the competing bidder E ($301), then F's higher bid - in this case the auction probably went up in $5 increments - of $306.

887456 2010-05-23 09:18:00 Somebody is correct, what you are seeing is an autobid being escalated by counterbids. It is most apparent when another person has also lodged an autobid and are topped by an existing autobid limit. Sometimes you will see a jump of $100 or more between consecutive bids by the same person.

887458 2010-05-23 23:14:00 Sometimes can get a bit frustrating, if you are placing constant standard bids, but get instantly out bidded buy a stream of auto bids. This is where one could place a autobid then just leave it, temporarily maybe. Helps to possibly overbid manually (and buy) in active bid war or "hot" auctions. kahawai chaser (3545)
887459 2010-05-23 23:40:00 Autobidding is a nice feature. If you are sure of your top price you wanna pay, set an autobid and just sit back and watch the others run around :p

You can also set a higher bid as a non autobid and that would just jump right up as a single bid.
I've done that also, once incorrectly not ticking the autobid box.
