887632 2010-06-06 12:01:00 Ok well how about you look at it this way? The wii is a general use console . It handles alot of everything, but for games such as FPS's, RPG's, and all the rest of it, the 3 power platforms are the main publishers .
Nintendo releases them too, but they are not generally very cross platform-y, due to the fact that their hardware is different . Take sonic unleashed as an example . There was a different version designed for the PS2/wii and the ps3/xbox . And within that, the PS2 had different functions to the Wii in some cases .
There's been unlimited bitching between the groups as to which game is better, when really, they are almost entirely different games .

If you are debating which platform has more of which, it might be an idea to consider which ones are aiming in the same direction, and compare them in these ways .

As it stands, I love the xbox 360 . Despite the reliability problems, it's a fabulous console . They were my primary hurdle to jump when I chose to buy mine, simply because I don't have the cash to replace it .

As for choosing between the ps3, pc and 360, I like the consoles because you have a controller which can be used at any angle, if you're on a pc, you have to have a keyboard and mouse and a platform on which to use them in most cases .
Not like you can play cs 1 . 6 while lying in bed on a night (yeah, laptop . . . . with a touchpad? pfffft) .
Further to this, a pc is a little harder to operate . A game either runs on a console or it's broken . On a pc it isn't often so simple .

Price was another factor for me . I already had a pc that suited my basic gaming needs . If I wanted a new one I would have had to shell out over $1000 for a new one .
Wheras an xbox 360 at the time only set me back $425 .

The ps3 was, imo, always ridiculously overpriced . At release time it was twice the price of a 360, nearly thrice the price of a wii .
It might be a stronger platform but by the gods if I'm paying over $1000 for a station that can't even play my old games that I'm more likely to want to enjoy than any new bullshit, it can go **** itself .

Even the 360 can play original games with a couple of megabytes of an update .
In most cases anyway .

So yeah tl;dr
360 wins over ps3 due to price, compatibility, and reliability issues seem to be sorted .

887633 2010-06-06 12:58:00 Pffft.

I was waiting for the Battleneter2 to lay waste to the "debate" by pointing out that the PC currently is the most widely used gaming platform in the world thanks to the likes of Farmworld.

But seeing as this massively popular game (I believe it alone is the most played game in the world, but when you add The Sims into the equation....boomfaa!!!!) and games like it aren't hardcore, he couldn't use that angle as they don't fit his narrow view of "worthy games",thus it would be somehow diluting the "leetness" of his chosen platform.

Trying to say the PC gaming market didn't go into decline or that a platform be excluded (a platform that didn't even exist when PC gaming suffered from the console wars) for such ridicules reasons was a poor choice to base an argument around.

887635 2010-06-06 21:24:00 The PS1 was probably doubted as a gaming platform when it was first released. The Wii also appeals to old gamers with the release of old games that were first a hit on the original nintendo's. So a console it is,as if it appeals too you is a different story. plod (107)

The PS1 was born out of a business deal gone south between Nintendo and Sony. Long story short, sony did what nintendo didn't. It got as many third-party developers on board as it could. They also went for CDs instead of cartridges. Overall, they done everything much more 'standard' than nintendo (EG, games could be coded in C, they used an off-the-shelf MIPS R3000A CPU with a few additions, standard CD-ROM audio, etc etc). Combine that with the fact that the nintendo 64 was pretty rubbish (bad GPU, bad RAM, hard to develop for), and the PS1 was a game-changer.

As for the Wii having old games... so? Nothing an emulator and ROM dumper can't fix.

Edit: I see your point. It's just like music and politics, everyone has their own opinions, we can't all agree.

I think when discussing PC gaming its assumed we are not talking Farmtown . "Technically" PC is the No1 gaming platform, but I was not going to take us there .

No matter how many threads thee are on this issues, game Developers continue to release cross platform games for PC as its clearly profitable . I remember these "PC dying" hysterical posts in the early days of Xbox and PS2 .

887638 2010-06-07 12:29:00 In any case, I have noticed a bit of a dropoff in the number of classic games that are appearing with memorable characters.
I mean think about it - way back when, sonic and mario were legendary titles on their respective platforms.
More recently Jak and Daxter, Crash bandicoot, Ratchet and Clank, (and still Mario... haha), but now I haven't really seen a release with that sort of feel to it.
I mean sure, the big daddies of bioshock are easy to recognise, but they're not... I can't explain it, they just don't carry the same level of awesome as previous characters did.
I mean jesus, gordon freeman when Hl1 first came along? LEGENDARY. now? meh.

I dunno, I guess I'm getting nostalgic or something, but I do feel we need another character or two like that for the now-gen consoles.

887639 2010-06-07 13:10:00 Right now i'm just waiting for Doom 4, Quake 5, Half-Life 2:Episode 3 and Portal 2...

But what we all really need is DUKE NUKEM FOREVER!!!

Games are games, The PC is only "the" popular platform if you include games even more lame then what in your mind excludes the Wii. So following your logic the PC is not hardcore enough to be included with the other gaming platforms. Hence your logic is crap.
