1155098 2010-12-19 08:04:00 Success - I just recovered this 1TB drive!

Attached are a couple of pictures showing my home-brew adapter and the drive, the commands and output in HyperTerminal and a photo of Seagate's firmware upgrade tool.

Just carefully follow the instructions, and it should work just fine ;)

Note: the pinout for my drive was different to that on the site. Mine is like the attached photo

Remember, Rx on the drive connects to Tx on your adaptor, and vice versa.

Putting them the wrong way around won't damage anything. But if it doesn't work for you, try swapping the wires.

1155099 2010-12-19 18:08:00  Congrats - that is great news.

I am not sure when I will have the time and space to do the same for my 500G hd but probably in the next week or so. Hopefully you will be around if I get stumped :).

1155100 2010-12-19 20:21:00 Yeah I should be around somewhere...

Make sure you verify correct operation of your adapter etc, use a stable system and even maybe a UPS if think power interruption is likely

Once you start the partition regeneration (or whatever it is) I'm pretty sure any interruptions would ruin everything.

Suggest you read this also: sites.google.com got some better information about the commands you need to enter. Also has the correct (for me) pinout.

1155101 2011-02-25 11:18:00 Just wondering if you ever got your HDD fixed? Agent_24 (57)
1155102 2011-02-25 19:53:00 Thanks for asking Agent_24. It has been on my mind recently. The short answer is: Not yet. I have told myself that 'next week' I should get onto it. I did manage to print quite a few pages from your links and then put the project on 'hold' until I got my new computer built and running sweet (did that 3 weeks ago).

I cannot recall the details of what I need to do but I do remember that there is an interface that can either be purchased or made from components (as you did).
Can you advise me where I can purchase the interface, or how I can make it myself? (I can do electronic stuff, circuit boards, etc. at least in a small way.) Would I be able to send you a bubble wrap bag, prepaid postage, with $$ for the unit you built? Or if you are located within a day's drive of me, I could come over with my Seagate brick...

1155103 2011-02-25 23:23:00 You can buy an RS232-TTL level shifter pretty much anywhere. eBay would probably be the cheapest, but of course it would take about 2 weeks to deliver.

I'd sell you mine but I'd prefer to keep it for myself, they are quite useful little things. I could build you one I guess but it would probably be cheaper to buy one at a shop (and you'd get one with an actual silk-screen so you'd know what the pins were - I regret not labeling my own, it's annoying having to look up the board layout each time to remember which pins are which)

I could try to recover your drive but I guess you'd have to risk it with the postal service, I'm in Auckland so you'd have to have a pretty fast car...

1155104 2011-02-25 23:32:00 Thanks for the info.

PriceSpy has RS232's for around $70. Ouch. I will have a look on eBay, or build one myself if it will be cheap. Otherwise I will probably get up to :D AKL in April on a motorcycle tour.

[edit] Are THESE (pricespy.co.nz)the RS232's that I need?
Strommer (42)
1155105 2011-02-25 23:42:00 No, that's for adding a serial port (RS232) to your computer via an expansion card. What we need to recover the drive is an RS232 to TTL converter.

What you need is one of these: cgi.ebay.com

But if you don't have a serial port or want something a bit easier, I think this should also work: cgi.ebay.com

1155106 2011-02-25 23:56:00 Or this ? (electronics-diy.com). Looks like you can get the IC from surplustronics up in Auckland for $4 Speedy Gonzales (78)
1155107 2011-02-26 00:45:00 Yeah you can make one yourself with a basic circuit such as that.

RS-Components would probably be a better place to buy the parts: The IC from here newzealand.rs-online.com is only $1.37 and you get free shipping.

You can also get the other components such as the voltage regulator and D-9 socket from them, the price is quite good - but probably not worth doing yourself unless you find it fun like I do, as I think a ready-made one would end up cheaper.
