Good info Speedy. Thanks.
Will check - a bit later today - will probably have to take the X@#!X! hd out, in order to read the label properly.

If it is the one discussed in the link you gave, it is hopeful: From the discussion:
"...not being recognized by the bios since december 23rd until january 27th... now it's working fine and it is not thanks to the manufacturer of the disk... I repaired it by myself with the help of a guide that is very easy to find using google and searching for the solution for seagate 7200.11 hdds and follow the indicated steps and cheap hardware. I have ALL my files back... "

This is the one at fault - it is not detected via BIOS and when connected it freezes the first boot up screen (before POST so cannot get into BIOS when this hd is connected).

I have a friend's 1TB 7200.11 which does exactly the same thing. It has SD15 firmware. I think this is the "BSY Error Bug" (the other is the 0LBA Bug) but I am not 100% sure. It's SD15 so I guess it's the firmware issue.

I am looking into trying to repair his, but I need a certain Torx screwdriver that I don't have yet. I will let you know if I make any progress with it.

I cannot tell if the faulty drive spins (or the good one).

BTW, I removed the tiny white plastic jumper on the faulty hd. Made no difference.

How do I determine if the SD15 firmware is at fault?

The faulty one I have spins up. Listening to it should be obvious if it spins or not. Resting your hand on top you can feel vibration usually.

That jumper just limits it to SATA 1 speed. In fact you should remove these anyway to get SATA 2 speed.

If the drive has the SD15 Firmware it will be written on the label.

I finally had a look and it is SD15 Firmware. Agent and Speedy, :thanks for your help.

In Speedy's link, there is a guy from Chile who said he fixed his SD15 hd by ordering something that cost $15 - perhaps a tool?

Agent_24, what will you do with the Torx screwdriver? Open the hd case so that the firmware can be changed somehow?

The next several days will be very busy for me so I won't be able to fiddle with the hd until next week, but by then hopefully we will know more about how to fix the SD15 bug.

.

Correction: His hd had firmware SD81, but I guess the fix would be the same (except for a different firmware download).

It's just to remove the PCB. You must power up the PCB without the heads\motor attached so you can actually issue commands to it.

As you see when it's connected to your PC, it locks everything up and does nothing.

Seagate's website mentions AD14, SD15, SD16, SD17, SD18, SD19, SD81 as all being affected. I think SD15 was just the first to be known, or most common.

If the drive is still working, upgrade the firmware NOW.

Once the hard drive has gone into a state where it can't be accessed, the first stage it not to upgrade the firmware.

The original firmware must be restored to working state first

This is done using these methods, depending on which error you are getting: www.msfn.org

I have built an RS232-TTL adaptor, but got no results upon powering up the drive. I believe I will need to remove the PCB to get anywhere, thus I need a Torx T6 first.

The hd I have cannot be accessed, but it does lock up the system - cannot even get into the BIOS .

So it seems I have to removed the PCB, restore the original firmware, then install the new firmware . Is this correct?

1155095 2010-12-17 06:11:00 Yes but there is more to it than that. The board must be reconnected while powered on and more commands issued.

You also need an RS232-TTL adaptor.

www.mapleleafmountain.com Is a good tutorial showing what needs to be done.

I will let you know how I get on with it after obtaining the correct screwdriver.

That is a detailed, informative article - thanks. With patience and carefully following the instructions, it looks like I can handle it. I will either borrow a RS232-TTL adaptor from a friend who works at a pc shop, or buy one. It will be nice to have the hd back in service... especially since I became slack in doing routine backups :waughh:

If my friend cannot loan me a Torx screwdriver, perhaps SuperCheap Auto will have one - or I may have one in one of my multi-bit screwdriver assortments.

1155097 2010-12-18 01:37:00 I built myself an RS232-TTL adaptor but can't receive anything from the drive with it.

I believe I need to isolate the heads or motor as he says before I will get anywhere.
