1155078 2010-11-22 01:47:00 Are the hdds SATA 2?? If they are, that mobo only supports SATA 1. You need to jumper those hdd's to SATA 1 / 150. For them to be recognised

Cannot recall if they are SATA1 or 2, but I configured them properly when installing and they have worked 100%. Nothing strange relating to the problem, e.g. no power surges or damage. I guess I could put a multi meter on the power plugs if I knew what the voltages should be when working properly (or if no voltage at all then that will be the problem).

1155079 2010-11-22 01:48:00 Whats the models of the hdd's? We'll soon find out if theyre SATA 1 or 2 Speedy Gonzales (78)

What is the point? They have been working perfectly for about 2 years.

1155081 2010-11-22 02:06:00 Well they're either SATA 2 and someone changed the jumpers;. Or theyre probably dead Speedy Gonzales (78)
1155082 2010-11-22 02:08:00 Do the drives still spin up?

Are they Seagates with SD15 firmware (known to have a bug which can cause problems)

The HDs do not spin. I removed the HDs and connected them to another PC - the 'data only' HD works fine but the other HD has WinXP and I cannot yet get data off of it (see my other thread here (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz)).

Anyhow ... the HDs are OK, so it must be the mobo.

I cannot see any damage, corrosion or dodgy capacitors on the mobo. The screws to the case are OK, and there are no loose cables.

Do mobos fail for no reason, and with nothing visible to indicate failure?

The mb is an ASUS but is over 6 years old, and I have been waiting for an excuse to upgrade... :D

Looks like I will soon start another thread regarding a new mb

1155084 2010-12-08 22:54:00 If they don't spin when connected to your board, but spin when connected to a different one then there's something wrong with your board.

Yes, boards can fail for no apparent reason (but there is always a reason!)

It *could* be capacitors... sometimes they can fail without showing visible signs, or they start leaking at the bottom and you don't notice anything for a while...

1155085 2010-12-08 23:22:00 HDD's dont even need to be connected to a board to spin up. As long as they are connected to the power, and you press the bottom, assuming the PSU is OK, you can feel /hear them spin up.

Since its a P4 Board, you'll be VERY lucky to find a new one, Second hand maybe on trademe, but they have not been produced for several years now.

To upgrade, it will mean New board/ CPU/ RAM -- and possible Graphic Card if its AGP, unless you are using Onboard Graphics.

OMG, I don't want a  second hand mb!

Of course, of course - a new mb, cpu, ram...
I will start a new thread about this.

Here are the two HD's:

ST3500320AS 500G SATA2 (purchased Dec 2008)
This is the one at fault - it is not detected via BIOS and when connected it freezes the first boot up screen (before POST so cannot get into BIOS when this hd is connected).

POS24110701 500G SATA2 (purchased Aug 2009)
This hd is OK - the back up data can be accessed.

I cannot tell if the faulty drive spins (or the good one).

For those observant PF1ers, you will know that I have a new mobo, cpu and RAM all ready to assemble. I purchased these as I thought the old P4P800 mb was dead - however, I was curious so I used Acronis to put a backed up drive image on a new 1T Seagate hd that arrived yesterday and the old P4 boots up OK. At the moment I am contemplating whether or not to return the new mb, cpu, ram... probably will keep it as 64 bit Win7 is enticing...:)

Anyhow, back to the topic: What to do with the non-accessible hd?
Is it totally dead? I have a hd dock station on order (today on 'FirstIn' , $39 double dock) and will drop the drive into the dock when it arrives - it is a shot in the dark but maybe it can read the hd.

BTW, I removed the tiny white plastic jumper on the faulty hd. Made no difference.

How do I determine if the SD15 firmware is at fault?
