889115 2010-05-29 04:47:00 The Kobo eReader is now available in NZ but why is the price after currency conversion just on $nz50.00 dearer than in Australia and $nz70.00 in the USA and approx $nz60.00 in Canada? (These are the only places available so far)

Looks to be a good device.

Yet methinks I smell a rip-off!

889116 2010-05-29 05:02:00 They will probably argue that they need to cover the cost of freight etc.

If you can get it from a good on-line store in Australia or the USA after including freight and after currency conversion at a better price then that might be the way to go.

889117 2010-05-29 05:44:00 It's still a great price for an e-ink based ebook reader, considering Dymocks or someone was selling their version for over $1000 not that long ago. somebody (208)
889118 2010-05-29 05:48:00 Theres a Whitcoulls app you can get on the iPhone or iPod touch for free. The eBooks cost but there is a large amount of titles available (around 3000 I think). davidmmac (4619)
889119 2010-05-29 06:13:00 There is over 8000 titles on the Whitcoulls site.. they are part of Borders and tie back into Australian company.

In their blurb the kobo can access a heap of titles not just from Whitcoulls.

My curiosity lies with a good product with wildly varying prices and NZ seems to be getting the worst of it.

889120 2010-05-29 06:14:00 8000 is not a huge number of titles... Erayd (23)
889121 2010-05-29 06:40:00 It is if they are all on your phone. ;) R2x1 (4628)
889122 2010-05-29 07:15:00 I had a look at one today. Way too slow. It reminds me of running Windows 3.1 on a 286 PC also I would like to see a 9 inch screen.. paulw (1826)

889124 2010-05-29 07:42:00 At $14.95 per book they are way too expensive! I'll stick to Project Gutenberg (free!!) and when I feel flush, eReader.com. They have huge numbers of titles, old and new, and although can be expensive if you want a recent release, they average about US$7 each...
There are lots of cheaper alternatives out there than Whitcoulls' solution.
