1156864 2010-11-27 04:11:00 The dd command in Linux is free. Then you can use Gparted or Partition Wizard (also free) to expand the partition(s) to the new drive size (assuming it's bigger) Agent_24 (57)
1156865 2010-11-27 05:03:00 Being a laptop HDD, if its IDE - you would either need to put them on a PC using adapters unless the drives are SATA then that wouldn't be a problem, or you will need some sort of USB storage device to make an image to, then image it back to the blank drive.

The Active@ gary mentioned before will do this, even the trial. You can download the trial from Here (www.disk-image.net) - its in the middle of the page "installer and bootable CD".

Then make the Bootable CD, boot from that - image the drive to a removable device - turn off the laptop, change the drives over - boot from the CD, and image it back. Should depending on the spec's take around 1-2 hours total.

I made these rough videos a while back -- shows making the CD - imaging to a USB drive - imaging back. Bootable CD and imaging (www.youtube.com) ( first part shows the folder on the USB drive) then Imaging back (www.youtube.com). Dont worry about the background noises  just me mucking about while getting bored.

1156866 2010-11-27 05:09:00 Dont think I will image, will try to just do a direct copy. nedkelly (9059)
1156867 2010-11-27 05:14:00 So you have two drives, and are going to connect to one PC and clone ??

You cant just copy the folders over, it wont work -- anyway, windows wont let you.

1156869 2010-11-27 05:43:00 how do you intend to copy the drive from one to the other ?

As previously mentioned, you cant simply go copy/paste -- it wont work.
