1156785 2010-11-28 11:00:00 When we got a laptop through flexirent, there was a phone home program with it, and it sent an email to the owner of said laptop if it was stolen giving the ip address, so you had something to take to the police. Will see if I can find the name of it tomorrow supergran (108)

And there is where the scheme will fall over
There are plenty of complaints re the Police not having time & refusing to investigate these smaller crimes, even when a physical address is supplied.

Oh ok, well I just thought it was an awesome idea. So if you still want to know the name, let me know, but maybe a waste of time if no one will help find it. I just thought it was a better idea than a picture, as you have to know the person to make a pic work, but with the isp address, that relates to a physical place.

1156789 2010-11-29 04:14:00 With Prey http://preyproject.com/ you can take a picture, get the IP address and if possible GPS location (if device supports), lock the computer so it has to be formatted to be used again. If you get the laptop back just take the lock off yourself and you're using it again.

It's not going to stop the smart ones but may help catch the dummies :)

And the Police down south here do follow up.

1156790 2010-11-29 18:22:00 I have Prey installed on my 3 personal computers. Works well on the testing I have done and free for 3 clients per account. Also works on Mac.

Thanks. Sorry - I don't know how I missed your post.
If Prey does in fact snap a pic and email it back to the owner, it will be installed

1156791 2010-11-29 19:22:00 Found this: www.freesoftware4all.co.uk might help? also ialertu works well but I think it's mac only

As far as I can see, all of the programs on that page are for webcam monitoring, not for recovering stolen laptops.
