2010-11-25 06:24:00 | I use standby when I'm watching TV etc, but I turn it off at night. Saves power and is less likely to explode while I'm sleeping.

2010-11-25 07:09:00 | A few years ago on one site a guy estimated how much power would be saved if everyone turned their PC off when leaving it for more than 1 hour and it was quite a substantial amount. | mikebartnz (21) | |
2010-11-25 08:16:00 | Is there potential to cause damage to a laptop when moving it (i.e. to and from work, not from the table to the couch) if it is not shut down fully? | Oose (14303) | |
2010-11-25 08:47:00 | Potentially the hard drive heads could be damaged if you jolted it or something, however laptop drives are designed with this in mind and usually unload the heads more often, etc Some drives also have a g-force sensor which will unload the heads if it detects the laptop is falling. If you were driving with your laptop turned on and just sitting on the back seat or something then I would turn it off unless there was a good reason for it to be on.

2010-11-25 19:59:00 | Both my home and work machines stay on....I have scheduled defrags and virus checkes going on and the system wakes from sleep for these runs.....I dont think either have been turned off for months now with the exception of WSUS restarts | SolMiester (139) | |
2010-11-25 20:56:00 | Yea I like sleep because a scheduled backup wakes the computer up to run it while I'm at work and then puts it back to sleep. | WarNox (8772) | |
