1156618 2010-11-26 01:35:00 I was informed by my ISP (Orcon) that my exchange is due for upgrade to ADSL2+ June next year :D

I figured it would be about 5 years, considering the size of this town.

Fear not all those in small towns - things may be happening a lot faster than we imagined :)

If it's not shown there, then it's part of Telecoms own unbundled network, which AFAIK they've jumped into bed with Slingshot (CallPlus), Vodafone and TelstraClear.

Trouble is it has to be 500 households or more.

According to that map my house is in the VDSL2 area but what does that really mean!? A really expensive service offered only by Telecom wholesale?

1156622 2010-11-26 10:48:00 It means that when it's finally available next year, you'll be able to get VDSL2 from Telecom for pricing that is still relatively competitive with todays ADSL2+ packages (Unofficially I've heard it's going to be $10-20-ish a month more) for full-line-speed, unlike those from TelstraClear of $399:

1156623 2010-11-26 11:38:00 Suppose its all kinda pointless if we're all still going over our caps, it'll just mean we can get there faster :) WarNox (8772)
1156624 2010-11-26 22:38:00 Yeah hopefully the Pacific Fibre project will do something about that. Time will tell... Chilling_Silence (9)

1156626 2010-11-26 23:02:00 Does anyone of you know what the plan is for rural schools?

Telecom/Vodafone have put in a bid to do fibre to rural schools + fixed cellular to the communities nearby www.nzherald.co.nz

It's obviously still a bid at this stage - I don't think anything has been signed yet.
