1158342 2010-12-03 01:18:00 Anyone managed to open a Seagate ext drive as per pic? Got one here with broken off USB socket. Don't know whether it is fixable but I can't get the damn thing apart! No screws - looked under rubber feet pads. Just can't seem to spring the plastic away from the metal sides.

Thought of an axe, but maybe someone has managed this feat!

1158344 2010-12-03 02:23:00 even if it's not repairable and you do break it in the process you should still be able to extract the drive and mount it internally in a pc. dugimodo (138)

Screws also like to hide under labels too

1158347 2010-12-03 09:07:00 Got it off and even had a few clips unbroken! However, mini USB socket was completely broken off!

Then looked at WD Elements with angled USB socket. It is crook, too. Big saga behind this one - take too long to tell. Briefly, it nearly killed my main machine but thankful my PSU shutdown and recovered itself later. Whew.

1158348 2010-12-03 09:59:00 And that's why I don't like tiny little surface-mount things.

A proper serial port with screws would have pulled your computer onto the floor before the port broke off.

Anyway, if the PCB isn't damaged, you could probably resolder the port. If not, just get a new case...

1158349 2010-12-03 10:05:00 Funny that, i'm just fixing one for a mate, same thing happened too, USB port fell off it. He broke the back clip getting it out though. I'm going to try to solder a new port on and if that fails then a new case with eSATA and USB 2 support will replace the original. The Error Guy (14052)
1158350 2010-12-03 11:07:00 SMT is fine for internal stuff, but for jacks and other things that come under mechanical strain it's a bloody stupid idea.

Of course they probably do it on purpose so it'll break and you'll have to buy a new one!
