| 1158162 | 2010-12-02 08:07:00 | Anyone else having constant problems with getting a good speed out of xnet between 7 and 9pm ? I live on Auckland north shore and for the last 2 weeks xnet has been awful - much more than normal with often pages not loading and having to be refreshed several times to get them to load up. Getting tired of this poor service, and it used to be so good once upon a time. Never know they may watch this forum and respond.... |

| 1158163 | 2010-12-02 08:09:00 | Its been like that since 2007. Which is why I'm going to another ISP. Try downloading a file now, its not funny. I (tried) to download a file last week, 8.30 at night. It took till 12.45 the next morning for me to get a decent speed. So, I could get it | Speedy Gonzales (78) | ||

| 1158165 | 2010-12-02 08:28:00 | This is from 18 Nov from Xnet. After I sent an email, saying their speed sucks The next reply was test my speed on speedtest in NZ. Which was a waste of time, because I wasn't downloading from NZ. So, what was the point Sorry to hear you're still having speed issues. We are aware of the issue, and after several different methods have failed to produce the desired results over a long-term period, we've recently made some changes to our system that may have better results. The issue is that we have some of the lowest rates for full speed ADSL and Naked DSL, both with connection fees, and most importantly, usage. This caused all the heaviest downloaders to switch to us, choking the link from Telecom's backbone to us. We tried to combat it with the Torrent plan, to get the heavy users using it in off-peak hours. This worked for torrents, but people who thrash torrents are generally heavy internet users even when they aren't torrenting, and this plan had very little effect. Next, we tried negotiating more backhaul from Telecom. They are not required to do this, but they did after some discussion. For a while, it was good, then things started to get worse when people realised it was good and started increasing peak time usage. Then we had some network changes made, which had the same effect as above- short term results that petered out. Now, we've had to take some more drastic measures, and we've dropped the Torrent plan. People can no longer join it. Also, all new customers are able to choose two new plans, not so different from the old ones, but with higher data charges of $1.28 per GB instead of just $1. This should reduce usage and heavy downloading in peak times significantly, but the results will take time to show. As people leave, or change address, or upgrade their plans, the number of torrenters will drop, as will the number of customers on $1 a gig plans, and speeds should start creeping back up. The speed is still well above what has been approved by the Commerce Commission, so we are not able to fight for more backhaul (we already get more than we should), but rather than charge high rates, we are aiming for the best balance between speed and price for our customers. Time will tell if the latest changes work or not, but the team are optimistic. |
