1157722 2010-12-01 03:36:00 Hi guys and hoping you can help .

Whilst our computer was in the shop, having a makeover, a friend gave us a laptop .

When I told him ours was now fixed, he said he was giving us the laptop .

Wow, I thought .

It has been a work computer, for about 5 years and had a hard life .

I have two problems, with it and hoping you can help, please?

First is that every now and then the screen goes black . Nothing . I tried the toggle thing, for switching screens, but still nothing .

When it's like this the hard drive light is flashing and even if I leave it, so sometime, still nothing . While it's like this the power button doesn't work and I have to push the disconnect button, on the side, by the power in connector .

Computer restarts, no problem, after that .

It also does this if it's been in Standby mode .

Also is very slow . Internet, via WiFi, is good, but computer itself is slow .

It's an Asus Z8100 . 2 . 8 GHz's 448 MB's ram and running Windows XP Pro . It has a partitioned hard drive . C: is 22 . 3 GB's and 12 . 4 GB's free, D: is 14 . 8 and 11 . 9 free .

Hope this helps,

Ian :banana

1157723 2010-12-01 03:40:00 Kill hibernation. Is SP3 on it? Is it up to date? It maybe slow coz thats not a lot of ram. Either get more or delete some entries in startup Speedy Gonzales (78)
1157724 2010-12-01 03:41:00 448mb ram - thats your main slowness issue

Check the power save options make sure they are off, sounds like its going to sleep and not coming out of it, common issue with older machines.

Hi Speedy. Yes I have killed hibernation, has SP and is all updated. After he told me, it was mine, I did a big clear out, doc's, programs I won't use, etc and Start us is basically Comodo and not much else there. Do you think a defrag would help speed?

Power save, on mains is off. So are you saying I shouldn't put it to sleep, as that's what closing lid does?

Ram, gota find out what ram it is and costing....:illogical

1157727 2010-12-01 03:48:00 Closing the lid is fine, its doing what its susposed to do. But if its hitting sleep mode due to settings being too short or its turning off the monitor after a minute of not using it etc etc, thats what I am referring too. DeSade (984)

Add more RAM.
Wipe it and do a fresh install (or reload factory image)
Add some anti virus and anti spyware and it will be a massive improvement.

Ram is a major, funds.
I am running Comodo Internet Security and a reload is not a major, but will it fix my screen turning off problem?:badpc:

No and it's pretty old, but, I can't complain as it was given to me.

I can do system reload by installing ram on a laptop don't look easy?
