1106456 2010-06-03 21:06:00 We have a fault in the telephone system after heavy rain. Telecom think it is the street cabling. In this part of Christchurch there are street cables and final distribution is overhead, although our house has underground power & telephone cables. The mystery is that my internet connection from Snap is OK, and we can ring out, but no-one can ring in. Telecom has diverted calls to my wife's cell, I am a luddite without one. Does anyone know why it only works in one direction? Brucem (8688)

1106458 2010-06-03 22:14:00 Chorus tried yesterday, at the junction box along the street, but report that the problem is worse that expected my wife spoke to the telecom operator who said the cable was involved, and it will be repaired by tomorrow (Saturday) @ 5pm! Brucem (8688)
1106459 2010-06-03 22:50:00 Time to stop being a Luddite? johcar (6283)
1106460 2010-06-03 22:55:00 Happens all the time when water gets into the line or phone jacks.
Must have something to do with the ringing voltage when someone tries to call in.

1106461 2010-06-03 23:28:00 When they fixed mine they found the fault lay between my house and the road which required a bit of digging. Because they didn't have time to fix it on the day they put up a temp. cable between my house and the connection thingy on the road. They came back a few days later and did a permanent fix. I think the Telecom contractors back then were Downer.

1106462 2010-06-03 23:33:00 I've had this happen twice in the last two weeks with the rain we're having.

Only started happening after Chorus went through and did a cabnetisation of my area.

Has been fixed pretty quick both times, but it is annoying. Same symptoms, internet fine, but phone is either dead, or degraded to the point where it's unusable.

1106463 2010-06-03 23:56:00 Won't matter soon - phone will be VOIP and use the same line as the internet connection johcar (6283)
1106464 2010-06-04 00:09:00 My ADSL speed which should be 4Mbit drops to 2Mbit due to some fault\problem on the line.

A Telecom technician had confirmed that such a drop in speed over such a short distance is not normal but because the line checks out as perfect they won't do anything about it unless it gets worse and something shows up on their line tester.
