1106085 2010-06-04 10:16:00 Nah, I meant you don't have any right to insist they they install it on their own systems, as goodiesguy suggested.

Why not? Who knows what they get up to with the information they may collect, you should be allowed to see what they're doing with it, it is after all, YOUR information.

its to stop you playing computor games and not working on useful things
you dont need to access any thing but tech stuff at school and definitely not to bring un authorized stuff to the school computors.
just imagine if a load of interesting porn was loaded on the school computors

Even if it's a boarding school I'm sure they're not being taught 24\7, and there is time when they could play games etc, and certainly shouldn't be banned from using PressF1 - on their own computers!

1106086 2010-06-04 10:25:00 Recently my school has decided that all boarders MUST have AB Tutor Control installed on their laptops. If you don't let them install it the school will confiscate the laptop until you next go home and you are not allowed to bring it to school.

they also block countless websites by category and give no clear reason (forums, bulletins boards. education, humor, entertainment ect) I can only just accept this because we are using their internet connection so they can do what they want with it but they have recently banned T-sticks so we now have no alternative, fascist censored connection or nothing.

I was wondering if anyone else thinks this is a bit extreme or unethical of the school?

You'd have to be a school boy not to know how to circumvent that. Oh that's right - you are.

I hope they're banned from really dangerous places like the dairy. They have more porn in those places these days than milk.

1106088 2010-06-04 11:03:00 Oh it don't stop us playing games, the school network can't cope with anything above the original DOS quake running over the LAN so we have a nice ad-hoc LAN set up (ping 30~80m/s) and they cant see you unless you are connected to the LAN anyway so its actually a waste of time.

@twelvevolts, its quite easy to bypass most of the stuff the school has in place its just an inconvenience to run an SSH from my file server at home to the school and it chews up the bandwith and gives high latency

1106089 2010-06-04 12:44:00 Interesting thread.

If I mention the word porn here on the forums have I just ruined any chance of them unblocking this site for you?

But I'm kind of in the middle - I can see where the school is coming from and I can see where you're coming from. I'm not gonna say man up and accept the rules and stop crying (WE ARE NOT IN THE 60's ANYMORE)[besides there is a lot worse a kid nowdays can be doing at school than going on forums - bunking, smoking pot on the field, stabbing teachers etc] but I can see they're just trying to cover their own asses.

Meh

Good to see you're getting an education.

Nah, your all good with saying that, I won't be showing this thread to the school because i've probably said to much about how it fails

(Violation of Section 34C Sub Sect D)

No student may be in possession of and/or be associated with and material that shows the school to be a failure in any way. Violation of this will be dealt with by the headmaster and a significant array of nuclear ordinance.

Just goes to show you can't be trusted to stick to the rules!
Just suck it in concentrate on real schoolwork & access those banned sites & games when you get home and have your homework finished.

He's a boarding student, so school *is* home. I think that was the entire basis for his complaint...
