1106591 2010-06-06 05:18:00 The new battery is not proving to be much help. Do they have to go up at the front where the old one is? R2x1 (4628)

Maybe, but you should have bought a Lucas Battery made at Foremans Road, where all the good batteries were made

1106594 2010-06-06 13:30:00 Did you try the start test I mentioned earlier? What reading did you get? And also read the document/site? That listed possible causes - including low water. Perhaps test again once you get the battery charged, if you get start/battery problems.

I read the document but did not try the start test, because I already know from the black indicator and low open-circuit voltage that the battery is low in charge.

I did check the water levels and they appear OK, ie just below the bottom of the cap.

Tomorrow I'll have a look around the house, chances are good that I'll have an old charger lying around somewhere. If so I'll charge it up then get it tested, if not I'll decide between buying a charger or just buying a new battery.

However before I do anything I'll retest the alternator, as I never checked it with the engine revving above idle. If its normal it almost surely must be the battery, because it doesn't seem likely to me that a 40 minute drive at 14 volts (or even 13.8) is unable to replace the power used by a single second of cranking!

You mean just covering the plates?.
You seem to be dithering around like an old woman, which might not be cool if the car wont start late at night when you really want it to.
Say like Otara where it could even be life threatening.

1106596 2010-06-06 22:04:00 Got my second flat battery in two weeks yesterday, new battery it was. Car is 12 years old, pretty sure it might have been original as when I went to unbolt the battery stay it just broke off from corrosion. plod (107)

Yes he is a bit like an old women although he is only 20 or something. I know if it was me first signs of trouble I would be buying a new battery. I know I did about 4 years ago. Went out to start the car one morning no one home. Rang a mate to take to a auto electrician and bought a new battery. I know from 40 odd years of driving that it is very seldom the alternator or something else causing the flat battery.

1106598 2010-06-06 22:27:00 According to the markings on my camper bus batteries they were manufactured in 1996 and are still grunty. prefect (6291)
1106599 2010-06-06 22:32:00 The alternator light is off usually means it is charging ok.
If light does not come on when ignition turned on its usually the reg.
Have had one alternator which was only charging at 13v because a diode had died in the reg battery only just had enough grunt to start.

Sorry, but I need one of the other sort, since my car has an electrical system. I know that for a Lucas equipped car any old battery or box will do, and it has the added advantage that the battery can be placed anywhere, or even left out without affecting the vehicle. (Lucas were the originators of the fail-safe philosophy, in that it was safe to say that the only parts that wouldn't fail shortly were those that already had.)
It must be admitted that Lucas ignition systems were one of the most effective extinguishers made, a good anti-theft feature, and a powerful deterrent to excess speeds in wet weather.
