| 1106054 | 2010-06-03 01:58:00 | As usual, they're just a bunch of idiots who block everything because they're stupid\don't care\are too stupid to care. If I was in your situation I would be very pissed off. Blocking dodgy sites because of piracy, porn etc I think is fine but forums is just stupid. There are A LOT of very useful forums and even more which maybe aren't useful but aren't bad either. You could even explain that with a "some forums are dodgy, we can't be bothered working out which ones so we'll just block eveything" - pretty lame excuse but I can understand that too. But forcing you to install what constitutes spyware on your computer is just crap. Installing it on their own computers I would have no problem with, but when they want to make you install it on yours that's when they can really get stuffed. I know what I'd do. |

Truth be told most of us cant afford $60 a month for only 4gb on mobile broadband even if it was an alternative (but now its not) international students can't even use MSN or skype to contact home, most of the time I see them talking on cellphones that probably results in a huge international calling bill. We are going to write a letter to the school board regarding our position and see if we can get some improvements, as with all things they probably wont give it all to as at one and we'll have to see if other people can be sensible with it (mostly regarding the years below us ie 3rd, 4th and 5th form) only one good use for the system restore function, Die AB die! (frustrating as they treat us as a bunch of stupid 5yr olds, because we have admin rights on our own laptops I can stop the service from running on boot, block with firewall, uninstall ect. also quite funny is I used the same app to change internet settings a while back so we could access some some blocked sites (nothing bad or illegal though) and then they install it on our laptops! big laugh then restore! |

To my mind, Spyware is defined as "computer software that obtains information from a user's computer without the user's knowledge or consent" You might know it's there but it doesn't sound like you are consenting... You could of course argue that if it's not for an evil purpose (stealing your passwords, identity, money) that it's not spyware, but I think that's rubbish. Besides, how do you know someone working at the school isn't doing just that? How do they know their own machines aren't infected with a virus which is allowing some Russian hacker to spy on them, and thus spy on you as well... |

| 1106059 | 2010-06-03 03:04:00 | Sounds like they are using Telecom Schoolzone - the school can't add their own exceptions to the filtering rules, only apply to have them added to the global schoolzone whitelist. It also doesn't have options to have less strict filtering outside of school hours so they can either allow all forums all the time or block all forums all the time. They shouldn't need to install spyware on your personal laptops if you have to go through their web filter. What do they do about students with web enabled phones? |

| 1106060 | 2010-06-03 05:56:00 | They do use Schoolzone but they CAN change restrictions, when you set up an account or change an existing one you can check/un check boxes that set the restrictions by category, you can also block certain sites or add exceptions, they have done it before and I have as well. I won't take this to the media but I doubt the school will back down with AB, they claim its for our own safety but one of my main concerns is what they do with any info that they gain such as passwords, banking details and other sensitive data. I don't believe they have the right to go crawling through my personal files ect but they could if they wanted to. They claim that they wont use any information they obtain but who believes them? |

| 1106062 | 2010-06-03 10:05:00 | Though apparently they've banned the likes of 3G Data sticks also ... ? Local parenti...they are not yet adults and still require supervision, cant do that with 3g staicks.....I think the school is acting correctly, though probably a few youngies will go wah! |

| 1106063 | 2010-06-03 10:11:00 | Ok so its probably not unethical but the fact that we MUST comply and have no other option is a bit extreme in my views. I understand the school has a legal obligation to look after us but they refuse to unblock sites such pressf1 because it is a forum, I don't quite understand why they wont let us access it, it seems they don't either because they refuse to tell me why. I can understand them blocking sites related to piracy and pornography but some of the others are a bit far, almost all the boarders agree with this. I wouldn't expect a completely un-restricted connection at all incase some people got that Idea For the other Questions: I have an SSH to my computer at home, now running Ubuntu and 7 and we are definitely not allowed ANY 3G internet connections (and we don't get vodafone reception only telecom) The teachers don't manage the internet connection (through SINA by Editure) we have about 3 dedicated staff for that and they sure as hell do know how to change it. All you other sadistic sad sacks who tell us "children" to deal with it obviously have the inability to understand where I was coming from and have successfully defeated the whole point of this discussion so I assume you agree with us that the school having the ability to track EVERY key stroke and stalk you out on the 3 sites that they let us use is ok. point taken about BT, it did, I stopped it. They took my laptop for a year. Yours is not to reason why, your is but to do or ...... Does it matter WHY, them is the rules!.....Do you think you can debate the issue if you know the reason...LMAO...kids?, You be better off learning how to accept the things you cannot change......... |
