1106025 2010-06-02 05:51:00 If your a boarder I think its fair they should be able to do whatever they want outside of school hours. Like any normal person. But during school hours you should only be learning! hueybot3000 (3646)
1106026 2010-06-02 06:24:00 Vms wont work because they still have to use the network connection, and I can tell you from experience that it is very hard to get around ab tutor control nedkelly (9059)
1106027 2010-06-02 06:25:00 Meh, If you can't get around that then you deserve what you get. Metla (12)

When you are a boarder the school accepts responsibility 24/7. They are effectively acting as lawful guardians (loc parentis) at the request of your parents, and are legally responsible for your wellbeing.

They can block anything they wish so suck it in, the only alternative is to send you back to your parents if you won't wear it, and your parents would probably send you straight back with some tender parts missing.

Society has rules because society needs rules, and those who choose not to follow the rules run the risk of being removed from society for a while if caught. There are some new luxury hi-rise apartments with penthouse suites being prepared at Mt Eden for people who think they stand above the rules of society. :devil

1106029 2010-06-02 06:29:00 But forums? The youth in here bring all the wisdom, includin myself. Can;t have them blocked out hueybot3000 (3646)
1106030 2010-06-02 06:32:00 they also block countless websites by category and give no clear reason (forums, bulletins boards. education, humor, entertainment ect) You obviously never heard of this. (www.topbits.com) icow (15313)
1106031 2010-06-02 06:36:00 I was wondering if anyone else thinks this is a bit extreme or unethical of the school?A bit extreme, yes. Unethical, no - they can do what they like, it's their connection, and they are in effect your guardian while you are boarding there, so they have an obligation to make sure you are well cared for - if their definition of well cared for involves internet censorship, then so be it.

Recently my school has decided that all boarders MUST have AB Tutor Control installed on their laptops. If you don't let them install it the school will confiscate the laptop until you next go home and you are not allowed to bring it to school.Installed does not equal running or useful. By all means let them install it; if it then bugs you, just circumvent it.

VPN?

1106033 2010-06-02 06:47:00 VPN?Not if it installs network filter hooks, which if it's halfway decent it will. After installing this particular product, I'd no longer trust the OS it was installed on.

I have to say, looking at the feature list (www.abtutor.com), this appears to be a rather invasive piece of software. In the OP's shoes I'd be ditching the OS after it was installed - move it to a VM guest or something. That way it's there when needed, but only when you want it to be, and you don't have someone looking over your shoulder all the time with keylogging / screenshot / watching etc features. This thing basically leaves you no privacy.

You obviously never heard of this. (www.topbits.com)
That is not a sufficient measure to get around AB Tutor, it's more capable than you give it credit for ;).
