1158005 2010-12-02 01:34:00 Hi
Recently my computer boots up and the BIOS says
Detecting IDE Drives...

And hangs there.

I need to power off/reset several times before I hear the whine of the hard drive spin up. What could be the cause of this?

1158006 2010-12-02 02:52:00 Done a diagnostics on your HDD? What PSU do you have? Always had the same H/W or added anything recently? pctek (84)
1158007 2010-12-02 11:06:00 Hi
HDTune says all SMART status items are OK. I have a 250w Enermax PSU.
I haven't made any hardware changes.

Just then (in windows) I could hear the hard drive stop spinning, then spin up almost back to normal speed, then back down, then back up to normal again and my computer froze. Does this suggest a faulty PSU?

1158008 2010-12-02 11:14:00 Sounds more like the HDD is dying.
Backup any data you want to keep straight away before it dies completely.

1158009 2010-12-02 11:38:00 Hhmm, just then swapped the PSU for a 320 watt PSU, it spun up first time unlike the old PSU... utopian201 (6245)
1158010 2010-12-02 17:08:00 . I have a 250w Enermax PSU.

!!!! Thats way, way too small.
DOn't really know anyone who has less than 400w these days.
HDDs and optical drives will have problems if the PSU can't supply enough power.

Good brand though.

IBM SFF all have low wattage PSU,s these days. Onboard video, NIC and sound, 1 optical, 1 HDD and CPU doesnt need more than that...

Its an 8 year old Athlon 1800+, Geforce 4200ti with 2 hard drives and 2 optical drives, I think given the age, 250w is sufficient; 8 years ago you couldn't even get anything more than about 350w...

But if it was working fine before, why would the PSU fail to provide sufficient power only now?

Or is it a fauly HDD issue as cyabro said?

Well, PSU degrade without a doubt, however Im still of a mind that the HDD is about to fail......I would be creating an image or backing it up now!
