1159163 2010-12-05 22:48:00 I have a Toshiba L500 laptop with Windows 7. My broadband modem is a D-Link DSL-302G model. To connect to the web wirelessly from other areas of the house, I understood that I needed to replace the present modem with a wireless modem. But others opinion is that I only need a wireless router, which would allow wireless communication from the laptop to the router, and from the router (presumably wirelessly) to the existing modem. The laptop is the only computer in the house.
Would appreciate some advice on how best to establish wireless internet. Also, would I be wise to stick with D-Link gear?

1159164 2010-12-05 22:53:00 A wireless modem usually includes a router. Having a separate modem and router, it can be hard configuring the 2, so the 2 play nice together.

Theres a lot of threads on here, where people have had probs with trying to get a separate modem and router working. So, I would replace the modem you've got (if it doesnt support wireless), with a wireless modem/router

Get one of these (pbtech.co.nz).

And there's no need to shout...

1159166 2010-12-05 23:01:00 Yes, You can either replace your D-Link with an all-in-one device that incorporates ADSL, an ethernet switch and a wireless access point OR you can just add a wireless AP\ethernet switch.

The DSL-302Gs are quite old now, and don't even support ADSL2. Depending on your location, you may get a much faster Internet connection with a new ADSL2+ ADSL router.

You can check if ADSL2+ is available in your area at: www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps

If you're with Telecom, you can probably get a free upgrade to a new wireless router (though you may have to get a 12 or 24 month contract)

1159167 2010-12-06 00:43:00 Yr link took me to a review of Netcomm's NB6Plus4Wn - desribed as "a reliable all-in-one ADSL2+ modem router" But added "We found the NB6Plus4Wn's wireless performance (with the current firmware, 3.103m) to be sluggish when connecting with Centrino-based laptops. Using an Intel WiFi 5100 chip (which is found in Centrino laptops), we could only connect to the router at a speed of 54 megabits per second (although this fluctuated from 26Mbps to 65Mbps) and attained an average transfer speed of 1.9 megabytes per second. This speed is acceptable for an 802.11g network (though some are faster), but not for an 802.11n network. We tried three laptops with Intel WiFi 5100 chips (two from HP and one from Toshiba) and all performed slowly"
That does seem to be a slow speed. What do you think?

1159168 2010-12-06 00:59:00 I haven't found mine slow at all, but I'm pretty sure I haven't had one of those notebooks connecting to it yet...chilling? wratterus (105)
1159169 2010-12-06 02:16:00 Nah I've had several with that chipset, works fine.

End of the day, you're likely to be getting what? 5mbps via your ADSL? The WiFi won't be the bottleneck.

Besides, I was under the impression the L500's used a different wifi chipset?
Where did you find that review?
