1158875 2010-12-05 00:31:00 I live with three woman, one wife and two teenage daughters, I got my man shed all arranged, tools, lounge suite, tv, beer fridge coming. Now just need to be able to get the internet and I'm ready to move in. Problem being no internet and wireless from the house doesn't seem to quite reach. Am connected to xtra via a thompon wireless rounter. Distance from router to my man shed is approximately 50 - 60 mts. Any Ideas? Thanks.

1158876 2010-12-05 00:46:00 From the router, run a Ethernet cable to the shed.

Depending on the layout of the house & property, you can either run it along a fence, or like I did, dig a shallow trench across the yard (three - four inches deep), under the house, up through the floor to mounting box, and run the cable through some Conduct.

At the shed end, have it connecting into a mounting box,( this is so you can terminate it off) then from that to a Switch if you want more than one outlet > to what ever devices you want.

You can basically go to approx 100Mtrs, then there may be a bit of lag etc.

1158877 2010-12-05 00:48:00 Either get a better modem, (with more ports), if its has only got one port, and a long ethernet cable. Or wireless repeaters Speedy Gonzales (78)

The Thompson routers distributed by Telecom have 4 LAN ports on the back.

1158880 2010-12-05 02:28:00 As Wainuitech said, go hard wired if you can but if not wireless can do that distance easy with the right hardware. Give Dale a ring at Go Wireless NZ http://www.gowifi.co.nz/ This is who I use for all my wireless requirements and he knows his stuff :) berryb (99)
1158881 2010-12-05 08:24:00 I have a 60m network cable running out to my cave, It runs straight out a window, is pinned along the side of the house, then runs to the shed, over the shed roof, down the back wall, through another window and into the PC.

Shes been sitting out there for about 5 years now, and shes still going strong.

1158882 2010-12-05 09:38:00 Yeah you're *supposed* to use a special outdoor ethernet cable, but I wouldn't bother for just general home use. You'd be better to replace the cable when you run over it with the lawn mower or whatever rather than have it see out the end of its days. Chilling_Silence (9)
1158883 2010-12-05 11:43:00 Mmm... and if you want to protect the cable with something (prevent UV damage, pests eating the cable etc) standard garden hose is excellent for this. Erayd (23)
1158884 2010-12-05 13:11:00 I recommend the use of proper gel-filled outdoor cable.

The reason for this is apparent if you use normal cable and water gets in somehow.

The water works its way along the cable and out the ends. Happened to a friend of mine. Not very good for your PC\Router when water is coming out of the Ethernet cable.
