1158445 2010-12-03 09:15:00 OK, so I have dealt with two ext HDD enclosures (not mine) and both have broken USB sockets . These were used for backups and were rotated to the manager's home for off-site storage . However, this good practice has its downside, namely, eventual USB port damage .

I was going to buy two ext enclosures to replace the crook ones but then thought of using a docking station instead . No USB sockets to damage!

But then I thought about how fragile sata sockets were and wondered about frying pans and fire!

So, question for those who have used a sata dock, are the sata sockets up to it or are they likely to break after many insertions?

1158447 2010-12-03 09:56:00 While not using SATA docks, I have 6 or so drives I use for cloning customers damaged drives.

The sata ports on those do take a hammering with the consistent plugging/unplugging -- some are looking rather "Shabby" and getting close to being unusable.

I personally think external cases would be safer -- if a case breaks, no big deal, if the sata port breaks you're up the sh1t creek with out a paddle with that drive.

1158450 2010-12-04 08:27:00 What about very short extension leads tied to the remote drive?
The free end of the lead is the one that is plugged/unplugged all the time. TM has some 25cm USB leads at the moment for $5. Might not look very pretty, but will save the connectors.

At work I use gender changers on the RS232 serial connectors on our laptops and interface adaptors. I just replace the gender changers and leads when we start to have connectivity issues.
