This is a Lunar eclipse not a Solar eclipse.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes behind the earth such that the earth blocks the sun’s rays from striking the moon. This can occur only when the Sun (en.wikipedia.org), Earth (en.wikipedia.org) and Moon (en.wikipedia.org) are aligned exactly, or very closely so, with the Earth in the middle. Hence, there is always a full moon (en.wikipedia.org) the night of a lunar eclipse. The type and length of an eclipse depend upon the Moon’s location relative to its orbital nodes (en.wikipedia.org). The next total lunar eclipse (en.wikipedia.org) will occur on December 21, 2010. Unlike a solar eclipse (en.wikipedia.org), which can only be viewed from a certain relatively small area of the world, a lunar eclipse may be viewed from anywhere on the night side of the Earth. A lunar eclipse lasts for a few hours, whereas a total solar eclipse lasts for only a few minutes at any given place.

Did you read the article it clearly says in paragraph one that the moon is going to obscure the sun

New Zealanders will get the rare opportunity to observe a partial lunar eclipse when the moon obscures part of the sun this month.

The eclipse will be visible to the naked eye in all parts of the country on Saturday, June 26, with the best viewing available between 10.30pm and 12.30am.
