1158885 2010-12-05 19:12:00 Water can still work its way along the outside of a cable if you don't lay it right, regardless of if it's the proper outdoor stuff or not? Chilling_Silence (9)
1158886 2010-12-05 21:47:00 That's true, but I'm talking about inside the cable. Agent_24 (57)
1158887 2010-12-05 22:14:00 if you want to run it once and have it work forever bury a proper external cable in the ground, if you are happy to repair or replace it every so often just use normal cat 5 - it can work for years as stated. The external cable is much tougher and is waterproof, UV proof etc.

Another trick is to use 20mm conduit buried to protect the cable, fairly cheap to buy.

And one more note, 2 pair homelan phone cable is cheap and will work fine for 100M despite not being officially supported. 100 base T ethernet only uses 2 pairs. I have personally used it at close to 50M with no issues. You need pins 1&2 TX and 3&6 RX wired for 100M ethernet.

1158888 2010-12-06 07:06:00 I second using the proper outdoor cable if you decide cable is the way. If you put ordinary cable in conduit, water will probably get into the conduit.

There are some quite good aerials around for about $60 that give (say) 9dBi gain. You can start with one end only and if that doesn't do the job, add one at the other end too. I have experience in converting a system that did not reliably work into one that does with one of these aerials.

Or make you own "cantenna" - see www.turnpoint.net

1158894 2010-12-06 21:17:00 Forget about outdoor cable, just run a conduit, it's easy enough to replace the cable if you run in to problems.
