1108158 2010-06-08 23:40:00 Not paying GST / import duty is illegal - if you somehow get around it, it means that either you didn't declare the value of your item correctly, or the shipping company you used didn't process it properly.

Or the sender/shipping company relabeled the item... Few yeas back I purchased a $250 Seiko watch from ebay USA (city of Boise) and had it redirected to my uncle's address. But the box was labeled as a "calculator".

That too :rolleyes:. Although for most items, the value of the item matters more than what it actually is.

1108160 2010-06-09 01:41:00 Most of the stuff I buy from eBay gets labeled as a gift. In fact the envelopes are pre-printed with that on them. Agent_24 (57)
1108161 2010-06-09 02:19:00 As mentioned elsewhere in this thread - beware of the postage being added to the value of the goods. I got hooked with that last year, ended up paying tax on the whole lot, not just the goods purchased. Scouse (83)

Buy != gift...

I think Agent knows that. He's just pointing out that many ebay sellers are nice enough to do the lying for you :p

1108164 2010-06-09 02:57:00 So I have some DVDs coming from Amazon.com total price including postage and handling is $146.86 NZ. Postage and handling is $33.80 NZ, so I should only pay GST on $113.06 NZ.

No, you'd pay GST on the lot except that you're not importing enough to trigger the $50 minimum payment start. (GST on duty-inclusive value plus international freight and insurance charges. In your case $400 of DVDs incl postage would be $50 GST)

If the Govt wanted some easy money all they'd need is some smart inspection of all the grossly undervalued and gifts coming in but maybe Trademe would dry up :D

1108166 2010-06-09 04:31:00 Yes customs only do a random check on parcels etc coming into the country unless they look suspicious.
:)

1108167 2010-06-09 06:03:00 Thanks guys I must've got it mixed up. Imported $700 worth of engine parts (one package) from the US at the start of the year, didn't have to pay GST, the invoice in it said the total was about $13 --Wolf-- (128)
