| 1107927 | 2010-06-20 01:51:00 | i'm not worried about anyone "crawling along" (even 10% under the speed limit isn't crawling along). the main thing is if they preach the 5km/h grace and go get your vehicle checked speach, is Mrs Safety Conscious will take her Remurera Tractor, get the speedo calibrated (which can be expensive especially if they have to add a speedo gearbox or out converter. not all vehicles have dip switches on the senders you can flick to change the speedo readings) and then after all that $$$, go fit a new set of tires on months later, which turn out to be bigger tires and throws the speedo out the wrong way. so Mrs Safety Conscious starts getting tickets for doing everything right :( the tire industry is not setup to match tires size to vehicle speedo. having a correct speedo means nothing if the tire guys fit a different size tire. it would be interesting to see how the shops check the speedo's are reading right. strapping a vehicle on the dyno throws another curve ball into the mix. those into car racing know quite well that dyno's lie, there is a percentage of error from the operator. In other words thats why we need the Police to be able to exercise commonsense and tolerance. Not the guilty as charged mandate because someone has declared you will do that no matter the circumstances! Shut up and pay up or write in and still pay up, or go to court and take your chances. How many people will do that over a $30 or $80 infringement ticket? I never said speedometers should be 100% spot on what I said is we should know how accurate our speedometers are and drive accordingly. |

When I had mine done I thought it was very unscientific and I didn't truly trust it either. Those boxes on the side of the road telling you the speed you are doing aren't accurate as one time going past one going roughly 10kmh under the limit it told me to slow down (there was a lot of loose gravel on the road). |

| 1107929 | 2010-06-20 02:08:00 | What about those Kiwis that have done defensive driving courses as I have for example? When I had to do one because of driving a work vehicle I thought it was a complete joke. I hope they have improved a lot since then (1976). |

| 1107930 | 2010-06-20 02:18:00 | Of course a Truck Driver would never speed and risk their driving licence and income source would they? I've always imagined that they have a better idea of where the police or the cameras happen to be :D It's rare that you need to pass a bus . A friend working for Fonterra tells me that all their tankers have max speed governors . |

| 1107932 | 2010-06-20 02:32:00 | You might like paying fines but I don't. After getting a ticket a couple of years ago I discovered that when my speedo was registering 100km I was doing 114km with standard size tyres. After that I realised there weren't quite so many slow buggers on the road after all. Give me a cable speedo over an electronic one any day. My speedo now is for decoration as I never trust it and it is the first time I have had a vehicle in which I have no faith at all in the speedo. Thats exactly what happened to me mikebartnz! First time ever issued a ticket was a result of a inaccurate speedometer reading. I was gutted to say the least probably why I harp on about the magic dial! Never really figured anything wrong until we got a second car of the same make and model and noticed the fuel consumption differance and distance logs differant. I initially put it down to the second car having a deeper profile tyre! On this particular hot day I left work and pulled straight on to a 100kph road! So I was accelerating from a standing start! I noted a slight delay in the speedometer pick up and less than a kilometre up the road a Police Car was traveling the other way so I checked my speedo (as you do). Was puzzled when he did a Uturn to follow and stop me! He claimed I had recorded a speed in excess of 10kph not according to my speedo officer! He noted it on the ticket he issued and advised me to write in! 10kms further down the road the speedometer just dropped. The cable had snapped.... Got the cable replaced and took it to a firm with a Dyno road who do Police Speedometer Calibrations turns out my error showed 105kph @100 but at normal town driving 50kph was 50kph! GPS check said 106kph (but whats a Km), however we would or could not confirm how large the error was on the day because of the snapped cable. What erked me is I have spoken to the officer since who issued the ticket and he was surprised the matter was not dropped with the explanation! Just some civilian jerkoff behind a desk in wellington wanting to collect some revenue. Then a few weeks ago a speed camera van zapped another car we now have and it turns out the equpment they used was faulty, but only because I and a few others challenged it. Revenue gathering based on technology! |

| 1107934 | 2010-06-20 04:08:00 | Sigh . An infringement notice is just that . You can always take the matter to court if you want to . How many people do? Are you really going to take a few hours off work to attend court for a $30, $80 or $120 infringement notice? It should never get that far!!! Thats right it is a quick revenue grab! Even then the penalty is quite soft especially when it comes to points exceeded . How is a speed camera financial sting without points going to be an incentive to reduce speeding? How is $30 plus 10 demerits an incentive given it would take 10 incidents in 2 years to be banned and even then you can buy the licence back . Now thats the illegal speeding covered . Lets get down to the piss poor motoring that causes the accidents and what is the penalties there? Soft really the harshest penalty seem to be for minor traffic speed infringements . Hit erm in the wallet but dont take away that licence . |

| 1107935 | 2010-06-20 04:30:00 | and to top it all off....whats the odds of being caught ??? extremely little. even with the few speed camera cars around the odds are extremely low. for that particular weekend there was meant to be a blitz in rodney as well. did i see any cop cars....not really. just the one motorway patrol who turned around before getting to the black spot areas. so there was nothing in the dangerous sections of the highway. they can make tough laws etc etc, but doesn't mean **** because its either blatantly never enforced or enforced so little it doesn't change the bad driving culture. ........we should know how accurate our speedometers are and drive accordingly... but like a lot of traffic rules, theres either no or little checking/testing done. theres no facilities and no incentive for them to be checked. for eg when was the last time anyone had their braking distance checked when towing a trailer? personally i don't know anyone who has been checked and there heaps of vehicles on the road that would fail. |

My car being front wheel drive I know I have to be extra careful braking during the wet especially with a heavier load as when you brake the weight of the trailer tends to lift the front of the car and so reduce breaking and steering. |
