1107887 2010-06-13 10:53:00 Good and consistant Policing is another thing we lack but then thats because of the driving standard learned before becoming Police Officers. They need beeter training as well.
The problem there is that now it is more about revenue than true policing.

Exactly! Not so many years ago issuing a ticket was at the discreation of the officer. Now they have set guidlines that say you will be issued with a speeding ticket for speeds in excess of 10kph or we will place cameras in unmarked vans at the side of the road.

1107889 2010-06-13 13:07:00 There is an opt out clause in the ticket revenue stream, dont speed no need to contribute.
Probaly only me and a few rocket scientists have worked this one out.
On the discretion thing many motorists just take it as a bonus and continue speeding.
It needs to be graduated so as the offences rack up so does the punishment like fine, lose licence short period, car crushed, go to jail, lose licence for life.
Finland got it sussed for speeders you pay the fine based on your salary, on that scale I would pay nothing and Mr Nokia or Mr Sako (guns) would pay heaps

I wondered how long it would be before that line was used?

Its not just about speeding is it? Theres more to the road toll than just speeding . Its about poor driving skills inattention and lack of realisation of whats around them/us cacooned in our safe little metal boxs .
I wonder how drivers would turn out if they were to use pushbikes maybe more at an early age rather than jsut hoping in a car at 15? But no that wont happen because of the attiude towards cyclists . Before you say lycra loonies give it some thought those lycra loonies learned to drive cars first .

Anyone who says they have never exceeded the speelimit for even a split second is a liar . You see it on the open road trundling along at 90kph to scared to break the speedlimit because its dangerous yet what do they do when they reach a 50kph sign? Guess the favourite haunt of a speed camera van ;) and whats the other favourite place to speed? Road works!!!

Speed can be killer when you pull out of a road junction not looking where you are going! Is driving at the speedlimit going to save that other driver?maybe, maybe not! Whats the accident caused by? Inattention of the driver .

The most common cause of road accidents that I have come across is inattention or driving unfit not because of drugs, alchol but of being Tired . Bit as long as a vehicle was moving they can say speed was a factor .

Speeding has become about revenue collecting no doubt about it! With regards to discretion that has its limits as well, you harbitual speeder will soon become noticed after a few red flags appear on the licence or should has been . Even zero tolerance policing there will still be those trying their hand without respect for the road rules and they are the ones to remove from the road those with no respect, but along with them are those made to feel like criminals for a minor infringement .

The meaning of discretion is about the Police Officer excercising common sense of Road conditions, Locations, Hazzards and yes the appearance and attitude of someone . Not issuing a ticket because Wellingtion has told them they must issue a ticket because of of an alledged 11kph excess zapped at that second .

1107891 2010-06-13 23:04:00 Wont be revenue collecting if you dont speed, if you speed through roadworks you should be pulled from the car and arrested and jailed.
I have worked on diggers, graders, tractors, loaders, paving machines, water trucks, asphalt trucks and rollers at roadworks I have been so tempted to throw tools at speeding cars who dont seem to care if they bowl someone over working on the road or like me on the equipment.
They should be done for murder if they hit someone speeding.

1107892 2010-06-14 00:28:00 I second what you said Mikebartnz

Comparing our driving in New Zealand to that of places with worse percieved driving than our own is just an excuse not to improve. Its easy to say of well such and such is worse than here yet the challenge is to be better.

I learned to drive oi the UK and I have driven in Europe, the longer I drive in New Zealand the more I can feel my standard of courtesy dropping. Most obvious note is the lack of courtesy over here, it happens but very very rarely.

Couple examples would be the thank you hand gesture which is quite common in the UK. Driving over single lane bridges back in the UK you would get a thank you gesture or give one no matter whose right of way and get one in return. Over here....do that and its like an insult, drivers focused solely on the tar seal and avoiding any eye contact with the other driver. Funny thing the Tourists in the main are more polite than the average kiwi driver.

Another one is driving a Long vehicle HT, Bus trailer etc when you pass another vehicle how often do you see a headlight flash to warn its safe to come on over to the left? oh and the indicator flick a common sign used to say thanks.

Three times on Friday driving a Bus for a COF I was overtaken within a couple hundred metres of where the speedlimit went from 70 back to 100kph only to see the vehicles in front slow down a k of so up the road to pull off the road. Poor visibilty overtaking in the spray of a HT just to save a few seconds.

Courtesy, patiance and discipline all lacking features in the majority of kiwi motorists. Yet you all know its a problem but not prepared to change just blame someone else or compare with countries with lower standards.

Good and consistant Policing is another thing we lack but then thats because of the driving standard learned before becoming Police Officers. They need beeter training as well.

Well said coldfront.

As someone who is living in the UK at the moment, I spend half my time on the wrong side because of the narrow roads, nearly always get a nice thank you wave, when I let cars through. Also where I live, when driving it not just narrow roads, but sheep are allowed to roam freely on the roads,
We have wild stags that can jump out in front of you at any time, the sheep do this as well. And in the summer time hoards of cyclists arrive.
And you have to avoid the pot holes as well.

I dont think you really read what I wrote?

Maybe you did and I pointed out that anyone who says they do not speed is a Liar!

Totally agree about the roadworks situation! Those idiots who speed through them are all fine and comfy in that little box and then get all upset when another one of their "mates" passes them the opposite direction and pepper sprays their car with stones, chiping paint and cracking windscreens . But they are also to thick to realise those stones they are throwing up not only do that but to a person at the side of the road they might as well fire bullets at them .

I guess unless you have been taught a good standard of driving rather than given it as a birthright or coming of age then it would be harder to understand common sense . The New Zealand standard has a long way to go because it places $$$ above good standards .

What is wrong with revenue gathering? Helps pay for the Police who are out doing it.
