1111678 2010-06-19 23:53:00 Saw on TV last night some old guys outside unit had rusted away so bad that it wouldn't work. I think he lived in Wellington. It was about 4 years old, and he lived close to the sea. It was a Fujitsu model. They advised people who live by the sea or in places like Rotorua to give the outside unit a hose down 3 or 4 times a year. Also check your warranty as the outside unit may not be covered for corrosion.

Yep

1111681 2010-06-20 00:52:00 Can't suppliers house them? Like in a cabinet - much like some telephone/power supply units. kahawai chaser (3545)

It would defeat the purpose, as heat pumps/air conditioners need a ready supply of ambient air in order to function. If you housed the external unit in a weathertight box, then you wouldn't be able to extract heat energy out of the air to "pump" inside.

I see. Perhaps rig up a optional auxiliary supply like a large air tank?

We did something similar at work years ago for testing oxygen transmission through plastic films by pumping air (and calculated for oxygen) from a outdoor tank through the test apparatus.

1111684 2010-06-20 01:37:00 The heatpump manufacturers say that correct installation requires an anti-corrosive coating for the outside unit. Is it not possible for the unit to come already coated, or does it have to be done once it is installed? Greven (91)
1111685 2010-06-20 02:16:00 Even in a theoretically non-corrosive atmosphere (the Waitakere Ranges), my 9-year old unit has quite a few signs of surface rust on the casing. In fact I have just stripped it down as much as I could and de-rusted/repainted it. Tony (4941)
