1110807 2010-06-16 21:55:00 In other words, to convert it New Zealand accent. Long-term wise, I will be based in New Zealand, hence the question. I find that 90% of the native speakers in New Zealand have trouble comprehending my current accent.

Help?

An elocution school may help.

1110809 2010-06-16 22:06:00 How long have you been here? My accent is worst when I'm really tired or don't really want to talk/bored. But when I want to talk/feel chatty many NZers are surprised at how I have nearly no discernible accent.

I think I have a schizophrenic accent.

You will never "convert" to a NZ accent unless you are born here. The accent is picked up while you are a toddler. My sister has lived in Australia for over 30 years and luckliy hasnt got a run fingernails down blackboard aussie accent yet. My wife is Chinese and I still cant understand her sometimes especially when she is mad at me cursing me in Hokkeien.
I guess you still associate with foreign born people here so it will almost impossible to use NZ accent in speech unless you are an actor.
I can pick up the accent of poms who have been here for 50 years and came out here as kids.
By poms I lump the lot together englanders welsch scottish and irish there no need to differentiate between poms in NZ.
Like poms in pomland would care if I come from Motueka or Kaitaia.

1110812 2010-06-16 22:49:00 Hi Jumas. You're probably asking the impossible unless you were born here. However, as we host international students we find that if the students speak English at every opportunity, they become more proficient and understandable.

Not sure what your native language is, but try to make friends with Kiwi or other nationality people so that you have to speak English. Some of our students go and stay with their friends (same language) for the weekend and by Monday it can be difficult to understand them.

Speak English, watch movies in English, read books in English ... get really proficient in English so that any Kiwi can understand what you're saying and you'll pick up the Kiwi accent by listening ... in about twenty years or so.

You have to walk before you can run !!

1110813 2010-06-16 22:59:00 Asians have problems pronouncing 'R' sounds. So Rice ends up sounding like Lice.
If you are that worried go to a voice coach or just talk really fast like most kiwis do and then they will understand you.

1110814 2010-06-16 23:08:00 We hosted a Chinese student when we lived in Auckland many years ago. He spoke English around the house but his mates were all Chinese students. He did not mix with other Kiwis. So naturally he spoke more Chinese than English. Dumb. To speak KIWI you have to associate with Kiwis & copy the way of speaking. It will come. PJ Poppa John (284)

X3

A drama class may help or a speech therapy course. Also, check out whether there is a local Toastmaster's Club
www.toastmasters.org.nz

Your 'accent' probably will change over time without you realising it if you mix as much as possible with NZ born Kiwis. It shouldn't be a matter of wanting to change your 'accent' but just make yourself more easily understandable to our ears. Practice, practice, practice.

It's interesting that when we sing, a lot of accents are indistinguishable. I wouldn't suggest you go around singing all the time!! :)
