I reckon that's a bit unreasonable....being a skinny munt myself it obviously doesn't affect me but I still think anyone who lets themselves get that obese more than likely has some more (non physical) issues.

Sure, there can be an element of 'it's in the genes' going on, but only to a point - if people eat properly and occasionally exercise there is no need for anyone to get this obese.

I say good on the DHBs for refusing free surgery. Use the money for people who deserve it. :2cents:

Bariatric surgery – which reduces the stomach's size – costs between $17,000 and $35,000 but has dramatic effects, with patients typically losing half their body mass and any weight-related health problems.

It is the only option left for many morbidly obese people unable to lose the weight other ways.

What a load of utter crap.

These spineless, weak, pathetic bastards can just learn a little self-control and stop bloody eating so much and save themselves or the tax payer the ~$35k each.

That is a good point, I hadn't thought of it that way. If they had to be cared for or whatever, the cost to the taxpayer would be a lot greater than the 35k for the op.

But, I don't believe that the gastric bypass op is a magic fix for all their problems either, like is stated in the article, and more than likely they will still be a (greater than normal) financial burden for the taxpayer as they get older.

Its a bit of a lose - lose situation for the taxpayer. I imagine there are cases when having the surgery would cost less in the big scheme of things. Still sucks.

1109969 2010-06-13 23:34:00 The money saved by not letting it be wasted on people who have no self control could be used for kids with cancer or other diseases. Kids do not do anything wrong to get life threatening disease they deserve the health dollars not the fatties I saw in Burger King Lincoln Road on Saturday after kids soccer.
These huge people just about make me vomit wolfing down grotesque amounts of the same food which made them fat.

1109970 2010-06-13 23:44:00 nofam, they mention that at the bottom of the article.

It's really tragic to see that over 180,000 NZ'ers are morbidly obese. Morbid sounds too nice, so chucking it into Google suggests "horrifically obese" better suited.

Because the surgery is simply going to be shrinking their effective stomach size, it's been argued that you could simply manage your food intake more effectively to the same effects. Others have told me it's the "easy way out" of a hole you've dug yourself. Personally I have an incredibly fast metabolism, so I struggle to maintain even a "regular" weight, but by managing my diet and my intake, it's doable, and I'm healthy :)

I know a woman in our church who was rather overweight and she's just started dieting. It's been a right mission for her, but with determination and support from her family, she's doing it and losing lots of weight, and fast too :)

It's not easy, but definitely possible!

1109971 2010-06-13 23:44:00 I'll agree with the devils advocate to a point, but Ok so these lard asses want other people to fund the result of their laziness, why not fund the surgery and make them pay it back, with a small weekly payment, like they do with crims and blue collar crims, and make them do community service, you know get them out of the house and mobile and contributing back to society for the expense they have inflicted on it, I mean currently the Govt is supporting these people which is what $20000 a year, it makes sense and with less money coming in that means less money on KFC Morgenmuffel (187)
