OT: Whats wrong wif my fridge " pressf1.co.nz I always thought this was a send up, and I think, too, one of the threads that must surely earn a place in our all time Hall of Fame (or infamy?). If we have one. What's happened to Craig these days, does anyone know? :D |

| 1110889 | 2010-06-20 01:06:00 | Asians have problems pronouncing 'R' sounds. So Rice ends up sounding like Lice. ... Not exactly, for example, Indians, Indonesians, Malays, Philipinos, etc., are all Asians and they have no problems in pronouncing 'R's. :) Changing ones accent is extremely difficult (almost impossible) especially if you are a grown up. Why do you want to change your own accent, unique to your homeland? No necessity at all. To make it easier for the locals to understand your accent, just slow down your speed when talking to them. When I just arrived in NZ 20+ yrs ago, the locals don't understand my English and I don't understand what they're talking about! And it's usually when talking to those who are not well educated - just don't understand what they are talking about (they don't speak proper English - grammatically at least, for sure). I even have a friend, an Englishman who came from UK told me the same problem - the locals don't understand him and he doesn't understand the locals. :D But interestingly, we (Englishman and I) have no communication problems at all although we all came from different places and have different accents. To conclude, don't try to change your own accent, otherwise you are going to sound very funny. Just be what you are and proud of your own accent. There's nothing wrong with accents. Just speak proper and correct (proper grammar) English. Remember, slow down when you are experiencing difficulties. |

| 1110891 | 2010-06-20 01:16:00 | Sigh. I wish I can just "be myself", but in order to practice as a pharmacist in the future, I need to be able to converse with another colleague / customer without being prompted to repeat myself too frequently. In other words, the current accent is getting into my way. I am sure you CAN just be yourself - that's what you ARE. I do not foresee any problems at all after you have graduated , I mean when communicating with your colleagues and customers. Just be yourself and speak clearly using correct, proper English. Of course, if your English grammar is bad, then, it's another totally different story. Cheers |
