1110042 2010-06-15 02:34:00 If he paid for it himself he should have asked for the money back, he was still hefty until he got crook and died.
He is the only labor dude I ever liked, he didnt care much about himself and would give you the shirt off his back if you asked for it. I met him once he had a beer in one hand a sausage roll in the other and all the people around him were in stitches from laughing.
You couldnt insult him, he would come back with some witty reply which made you look like a twat every time a coconut.
i think he was truely hurt by carnage caused to people by the changes the government made in the 80s.

1110043 2010-06-15 02:36:00 I havent read the whole thread. I just want to say 1 thing that comes to mind straight away. Who is enabling these people to get so fat? If not themselves, it has to be someone close!....***, maybe we should make that person pay for the surgery
What a cunning stunt.

1110044 2010-06-15 02:47:00 These people should be put in a fat camp/health camp. We used to have them in NZ, but those sorts of things are no longer PC. Forcing these people to eat less is the fix, not an expensive operation, which can cause other problems. robbyp (2751)
1110045 2010-06-15 02:54:00 Ah yes, draconian knee-jerk reactions, not very helpful.
Support and friendly attitudes may well
achieve results which you will never with this
sort of rubbish.

1110046 2010-06-15 03:04:00 I have to agree if the fat people are not to blame for themselves being fat someone is force feeding them. Lets find these people and prosecute to the full strength of the law.

Some of these large people blame fast food restaurants, and some in the US have even sued them. A fat tax may help. 30 years ago, did we have these sorts of morbidly obese people in NZ, I certainly don't recall it. Then you have TVNZ promoting a woman for being the worlds fattest mother, like it it an achievement.

1110047 2010-06-15 03:33:00 From several people I know.

Obesity creeps up gradually on most. Usually happens over a number of years eating slightly to much and not enough exercise (our modern food high carbs etc also taking its toll)

The problem is in peoples heads, they don't see themselves as fat when hitting say 100KG's. By the time 120+ rolls around they are hitting on a weight that is incredibly hard to loose with diet and exercise. By the time they realise or stop the denial the job to loose is massive far beyond most peoples willpower.

There is a large misconception most Obese people are lazy and or eat "far" to much. The problem is usually more psychological.

I am all for state payed or at least heavily subsidised surgery assessed on a case by case basis, it would save our country 100's of million not to mention the social benefits.

Then send them to a shrink .

Isn't laziness a psychological issue too?

Oh, to be sure! I don't disagree with that.
I just think the 'bash a fatty' camp need to grow up a bit.
