1159949 2010-12-08 22:24:00 Remove the 2 sata drives from the boot menu!

I only connect one SATA drive at a time . The SATA that I managed to get data off of does not have the OS, so no problem . When I connect the SATA + OS (WinXP), the PC freezes on the first 'frame' - pressing DEL does not get the BIOS .

Does the motherboard support SATA 1 or 2? And are the SATA hdd's SATA 1 or 2?

If the mobo only supports SATA 1, and the hdds are SATA 2, you have to jumper the SATA's to SATA 1 / 150

Yes the mobo does have SATA . That is how I could connect the SATA cable to the Seagates . Not sure if it is SATA 1 or 2 . I put the mobo in 2 or 3 years ago (Sempron processor, cannot recall type of mb) . How do I tell if the Seagates are SATA 1 or 2 (written on the label)? BTW, the Seagates are both 500 Gb but were purchased separately and are not the same - the newer one is thinner .

Thanks for the terminology .

1159950 2010-12-08 23:55:00 Tell us what the model of the hdds are. That'll tell us whether theyre SATA 1 or 2. Altho it would help, if you knew what the model of the mobo is as well Speedy Gonzales (78)

I have the info about the hd's and mobo on a backup DVD... somewhere. Will hunt around later today. The backup may be an Acronis file, which will require transfer to USB stick, then using the business PC (not here at home) so it may take awhile.

But it seems to me that the only option I have is to remove - or add - a jumper on the hd with WinXP on it. ??

Is using a linux disk the only other way to access the data?

I was hoping that fiddling with the BIOS would stop the conflict by trying to access the (spare) hd with WinXP. ??

Well, I don't know about reviving myself but if your going to chuck it, chuck it my way!

If I end up fixing it i'll offer it back.
