1109972 2010-06-13 23:50:00 Personally I have an incredibly fast metabolism,

Don't rely on that, I also had a fast metabolism but as you get older, have kids and slow down the lifestyle (less cycling, more driving), the metabolism can slow down remarkably, A year after i stopped cycling everywhere i had put on about 18kg from about 78kgs to about 96kgs (and it sure as hell wasn't muscle), i am just over 6ft so its not too terrible but it was quite a shock when i got on the scales, after being the same weight for around 15 years

1109973 2010-06-13 23:59:00 Perhaps for a longer term solution they could reduce the size of hospital doorways thus limiting the size of people being admitted? Nature would then gradually correct the national gene imbalance that causes these people to involuntarily be so morbidly obese while for a generation or so requiring larger grave plots. Perhaps they could also fit the same size doors to junk food palaces, and prohibiting take-aways?

More laws and regulations are just what we need to enhance the environment..They could humanely euthanase left-handed people at the same time and rid us of another national disgrace.

18kg in a year! That's probably a faster increase than the women you're talking about. Who were you calling lard ass :D

1109975 2010-06-14 00:13:00 The only thing this surgery does, the only thing, is that it forces the person to eat less, while still creating a sense of fullness.

The same results can be achieved by eating smaller portions, and ignoring the hungering. I agree with prefect, if your energy in exceeds your energy out, then the remainder is stored as fat. Quite simple. If you don't have the self-control to ignore a minor feeling, then too bad. It's not like they're going to drop dead if they miss a meal or two.

1109976 2010-06-14 00:17:00 I think it's a culture thing as well. My son who has a pacific island partner, asks us what"s for lunch? I say well we just had it - a few sandwiches/snacks. But she has to have large helpings of fried chips, taro, chicken, etc. Some of their island birthday parties involves a huge amount of tasty, but rich creamy type servings. Bit sad to see even some of the young island kids are a bit big.

I know (and have heard) many NZ's might sneer at large island folks, or even large people in general, but can their be a NZ wide program or system that be could be implemented to prevent obesity early on?

My partners uncle (who I think was the 2nd or 3rd heaviest in NZ at about 38 stone a few years back and was a featured news item). He embarked on a weight program to lose weight what many fear to gain (about 18 stone) He used to eat at least 20 pies, and I have seen him plough through a bucket of mussels, and three crates of beer. But he did weight loss with support of his new partner and Jenny Craig type programs. But the cost of doing that was almost equivalent to his cost of eating but benefited in the end...

hehe..True...But he rarely got pissed, even after downing full bottles of whiskey...most people would be on their backs. We use to use him to pull out the ground gate posts for a temporary drive in, or to carry/lift our Holden engines to work on... as he had massive hands and arms. Once he crashed his impala, his stomach crunched the steering column, which I'm sure would kill most people. He only broke his legs.

He use to drive those monster quarry dump trucks on overseas jobs...

Aha, But I cut back the food, and had a shitload more salads, and stepped back to doing a little more exercise, so it hasn't risen anymore, not sure its gone down too much though, lost the scales when we shifted.

Dammit I just measured myself and I've shrunk 2 inches in height, I am now bang on 6ft, stuff this i'm off to KFC, i don't want to be a midget.

But I think their is a "ideal" height to weight ratio that you can compare, if you are worried about loss or gain of height or weight.

1109981 2010-06-14 00:52:00 salads can be posh and yummy.

i cannot have a crap diet, cos I get stomach cramps, i need more fibre than most people just to stay regular.

fillet of some fish or lamb is nice on a large salad with some wholemeal bread to wipe it up, half a glass of wine or just mineral water  Skip the dessert. Occasionally I may have a few nuts after dinner watching telly.

why have butter or olive/canola spreads when you can just have hummus and a sprinkle of herbs in that sandwich. not 2 but just 1.

breakie is just cereals "all bran" a heck more fibre and less crap than most of the other cereals. special k's has bugger any nutritional value thou low in fat/sugar too.. snacks - just have fruits and filtered water. hot drinks without sugar. no fizzies.
