1160292 2010-12-09 22:41:00 Hey guys.

So I am deciding on which laptop to purchase.

The 2 contenders are:

Asus G73JW-A1:

17.3-inch 1080p (1920x1080) display with LED backlighting
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Intel Core i7-740QM processor (1.73GHz/2.93GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB L3 cache)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M with 1.5GB GDDR5 Memory
8GB DDR3-1066 RAM (4x2GB)
Two 500GB 7200RPM hard drives (Seagate Momentus 7200.4/ST9500420AS) (Non-RAID)
Atheros AR9285 802.11n Wireless LAN adapter
Built-in Bluetooth 2.1+EDR
Blu-ray reader/8X DVD Super Multi drive
Two-year limited warranty (one year on battery pack) with one year of accidental damage protection
8-cell battery pack (14.8V, 5200mAh, 75Wh)
Weight: 8.79 pounds
Dimensions: 16.3" (W) x 12.6" (D) x 1.8" (H)

Asus G73JH-A1:

Identical to the above, except remove the nVidia GTX 460m and put in an AMD Mobility 5870. Take out the i7 740Qm and put in a i7 720QM.

The reason I am asking this question is that I was dead set on a G73JH-B1 which has the i7 740QM and AMD 5870 but they have been discontinued and re-released as the G73JW-A1 with the nVidia GTX 460M.

The GTX 460M's preform at about 10-20% less than the AMD 5870's, reason for this is that they also run cooler which for me is pointless because I don't mind the extra heat as long as it's doing the work. The chip doesn't care what heat it's at, it's still doing the same job at whatever temp.

So, do I go for the G73JW-A1 which has the slower video chip but faster CPU or do I go with the G73JH-A1 which has the faster video chip but with a slower CPU.

1160293 2010-12-09 22:47:00 What are you going to be using it for, is the big question as that determines which to go for gary67 (56)
1160294 2010-12-09 22:53:00 These models are in Asus G-series which are branded as gaming units.

So, games.

1160295 2010-12-09 23:18:00 WOW, a lappy with 4 RAM slots?...If it were me, Id go with the 460m...at 1080, the extra memory will be of more benefit over the 10% performance the 5879 has! SolMiester (139)
1160296 2010-12-09 23:21:00 Cheers dude.

I've started to lean towards the 460m as well. I've read stories of people overclocking it rather succesfully and it should do anything I want at a reasonable rate anyway.

1160297 2010-12-10 00:03:00 Just ordered the Asus G73JW-A1.

$1743USD = $2327NZD.

Free US shipping; had it sent to the inlaws in Seattle where I will be come Sunday.

Hoorah.
