Firefighters say the blaze that killed 57-year-old Don Barriball started after the door of a wood burner was left open and an ember jumped out on to carpet or furniture.

Get a heat pump. Oh, hang on............Don't:

A Blenheim couple woken by their smoke alarm had to flee their home after they were confronted by flames shooting from their heat pump early today.

That fire wasn't started by an ember - it was started by stupidity (there's a door there for a reason)

Heatpumps need regular maintenance; the indoor units have filters that need to be vacuumed, but they also need the coil cleaned every 2nd year or so, more so if you have pets, and the unit is floor-mounted. Still, I've never heard of one actually going on fire? :horrified

1111216 2010-06-18 07:44:00 Maybe they catch on fire to produce heat (i'm pretty sure the ones in out boarding house were taken out of a freezer unit) if the house catches fire then at least it will be nice and toasty The Error Guy (14052)
