YAY! taken years to save for etc, blah, blah.
Anyway I have just ordered an Asus eee 1201n.
www.asus.co.nz

I took the advice you folks have given others, that
Asus make reliable laptops.

This one is 12in, with dual core Atom 330 1.6 GHz (hypertheader)
With the first generation Ion GPU (GeForce 9400M) 512 MB video RAM.

It has 250 GB hard drive + 500GB online storage (ideal for photos etc when we are traveling)

It has Windows7 Home Premium (Hosanna, hosanna!)

It will run Photoshop & Premiere Pro.

It has an HDMI port and can output 1080p.

2GB DDR2 SDRAM + one empty SODIMM slot (my HP has compatible second SODIMM so can up it to 4GB for free)

Purchased it from Quay Computers, Wellington via TradeMe.

No idea if they are good or bad and couldn't ask you guys 'cause I stupidly got banned:o, but they have been going for 19 years, if that means anything?

Anyone got one or used one?

Or used Quay?

Quay are OK, but there aftersales support is not great from my experience. I had a microsoft mouse that failed after 2 years and had a 3 year warrenty on it. They said that it only had a one year warrenty, and wouldn't replace or repair it. I had to contact microsoft directly to get it replaced, so not a company I would use again. That was however their lower hutt branch, which I believe has now closed.

1113752 2010-06-26 12:11:00 I've used Quay but a long time ago. I had no problems then. Wgton Branch. Sweep (90)

So good for travel maybe.

They are apparently overclockable.:wub

1113754 2010-06-26 18:39:00 Or used Quay?

Quay (Lambton) built my current desktop about 4 1/2 years ago, paid about $3500 back then.

Can't really comment on after-sales service because the machine has been faultless. Not one thing has gone wrong, and I've only been in there once since.

If I was lucky enough to have the same amount lying around for another build I'd be back there in a shot.

Probably doesn't answer your question, or maybe it does in a round-about way...

Doesn't matter cause you can go back to Asus with the warranty and if for some reason you need the shop, there's the CGA.

Are auctions covered under the CGA

I bought a CDROM back in the days, they fail to admit it was there's so I had to walk out and I also had to ask for it back too. He took the drive and said the tech had gone out.

For travelling I have now est. 5kg all cargo when I go overseas. When I was at EU I was just at the start of it. I had just a daypack with expandable sides, incl a sleeping bag which I didn't use prob about 8kg I guess. With a Lowepro wasit / shoulder bag for the cam.

Not looked into Netbooks yet cos for my style might be too restricted. I find the larger thing could be the charger that tips it over. Plus I don't really check email or the net, maybe 15min each 3 or 4 or 7 days at the hostel. The last trip to Asia I checked it via my Nokia E-75 which has WIFI and with an application I got Skype/MSN/Yahoo. Re: that the larger screen phones might of been better (for travelling). Simcard also not bad given that they are not as pricey as NZ generally and you get GPS func plus the odd call home.

Some of the ultra thin laptops are about size of netbooks anyway. Apart from a larger wrist rest. Same thickness and width. Some also have a 12" screen but not as wide as the Netbook. Thou I don't use them for travel. :p

1113757 2010-06-26 22:46:00 We recently made a warranty claim through Quay for a 2 year old hard drive (it had a 3 year warranty) and it went through smoothly without any issues. As you said, they've been in business for a long time, which is a good sign - we some Quay branded white-box PCs at work which would have been bought in the early 2000's which are still going strong. somebody (208)

Yes, auctions are covered under the CGA if the seller you purchase from is a dealer (which in this case it is).

1113759 2010-06-27 02:22:00 In my experience they're pretty good at selling stuff, but lousy at the after-sales service. If anything breaks, they're hell to deal with trying to get it sorted.

Note that this was a few years ago though, so they may have improved since.
