So how does this help the balance of payments?

1112530 2010-06-23 01:55:00 I'm pretty sure china has never used hostile military force or intelligence agencies to force regime/government change. I know the CIA has instigated coups on democratically elected governments. I think it was in South America.

.

oh for sure. Then there is the "fact" Al-Qaeda was trained and armed by the CIA in the late 80's to kill Russians recorded in 100's of documents and admitted by top officials. To spell that out they pretty much created Al-Qaeda.

Then there is the US Saddam Hussein relationship, could write pages on this.

Probably every major country on earth is guilty of "Terrorism" and the mass killing of innocent life for $$. The single annoying thing to me is how we "the West" are brainwashed into thinking we are righteous. I guess we sleep better that way. I just hate people bagging China without looking in the mirror first.

1112531 2010-06-23 01:59:00 You can call us pakeha (maoris for pig)

Ummm - nope. I believe the maori word for pig is 'poaka'. The thought that Pakeha literally means pig or white pig is a myth which is unfortunately passed on by the misinformed.

This from wikipedia - which is not always best source - but pretty accurate here:

There have been several dubious interpretations given to the word Pākehā. One claims that it derives from poaka the Māori word for (pig), and keha, one of the Māori words for (flea), and therefore expresses derogatory implications. There is no etymological or linguistic support for this notion - like all Polynesian languages, Māori is generally very conservative in terms of vowels; it would be extremely unusual for 'pā-' to derive from 'poaka'. The more common Māori word for flea is puruhi. It is also sometimes claimed that 'Pakeha' means white pig or unwelcome white stranger. However, no part of the word signifies "pig", "white", "unwelcome", or "stranger"

While no definitive literal translation appears to exist, most references seem to agree Pakeha simply means not of Maori descent.

And Martynz if we import something from the USA with Chinese parts included it surely would not count as being imported from China.

Also it has to be noted there are far more consumers in China than there are in NZ.

Found this table for 2004 - 2006.

Anyway on topic, that data is to old, new exports have gone over 3Bn ($NZ3.62) but cant find imports. I tend to think we now run a surplus to China.

1112534 2010-06-23 02:13:00 Yes I anm sure that Ipods made in China would be counted as imported from the USA.

(as an aside I wonder how much Cadburys chocolate will we be importing from Australia a year ! - how many containers and how many dollars - when we made perfectly good chocolate here and our ages are lower !)

Agreed that the data is old and does not indicate a trend as such.

hmmmmmm not sure . No doubt paid in $US . I would have "thought" the value of the goods would be recorded against the source county as they come into NZ . Not sure how this data is collected .
