It's easy money for them as it is very easy to prey on a customer's lack of confidence in technology and lack of knowledge of consumer law. The underwriters of the policy are playing a numbers game - sure, there will probably be some payouts, but the bulk of the premiums charged go straight to the bottom line of that company: pure profit. But then, that's insurance anyway isn't it? Definition of a scam: "Anything good that you're not in on yourself" Yeah, I suspect if they didn't sell extended warranties, they would either need to charge more for the items, or they may not survive. |

I've seen the small print in a desktop warranty. Excludes monitor, excludes, KB, mouse etc. Excludes this problem, excludes that problem. There was hardly anything left. Consumer Insurance are good about claims & what they cover as long as the toaster shop actually lets you start a claim. Extended warranties are technically useless, but has anyone tried getting something done under the CGA? For a lot of people it is worth the extra money to have their device covered without fighting tooth & nail for it. |

But as I said earlier the cost of the extended warranty is often more than the cost of the replacement parts. |
