1112617 2010-06-28 21:35:00 We never even heard this description of NZ being a democracy, which it is not, you don't even have a constitution, until the late 80's when the american influence became all-pervasive in the country, and marketing of lifestyles over-came common sense as the american business machine conquered all. zqwerty (97)
1112618 2010-06-28 22:17:00 You are clueless zqwerty

The American Constitution is worthless, The Patriot Act effectively renders it a Museum relic.

We are based on the British legal and political system, NZ does not need a American style constitution, it certainly hasn't helped them to remain a democracy lol.

1112619 2010-06-28 23:00:00 ... corruption here is very low..
www.nbr.co.nz

I may have to disagree with you on this matter, on the contrary, I think corruption is quite a serious problem her in NZ - only difference is the politicians 'legalised' it! Of course, corruption in NZ is different from those in Indonesia, Malaysia, etc. where govt officials accept $10 or $20. Our system has lots of loopholes for the rich to get richer, and richer, and, opportunities for the 'professionals' without professional ethique to make lots and lots of unethical money.

Corruption is every where. Surprisingly, I notice that lots of locals don't see it as a form of corruption, like for example, unnecessary public works contracts, over-blown budgets, immigration issues, ... etc., etc. ...

1112620 2010-06-28 23:16:00 bk T Humans are corrupt and greedy by nature doesn't matter if they are Kiwi, American, Iranian or Chinese.

There is "some" corruption in NZ society but nothing like the US or China, we are talking about the "Level" of corruption, its mind boggling if anyone thinks we are in the same league.

As for the rich getting richer, that's called Capitalism, NZ has a fairly low percentage of millionaires per population.

I really wish we are! But from my personal experiences, we are not, sadly. From the first day I arrived in NZ, my NZ friends told me that NZ is a 'corruption-free' nation but it proved my friend are not quite right!

If we call NZ a 'clean' nation, what do you call Singapore?

Nevertheless, I would really wish New Zealand is one of the most uncorrupted nation in the world, but by looking at the present bunch of politicians, can we have much hope??? They are probably one of the MOST untrustworthy citizens in NZ.

1112624 2010-06-29 04:33:00 Singapore is a Nazi style state. My wife is Singaporean and I have spent many years there.
You say anything bad about the PAP you go to jail. Try and go in opposition to them got to jail. Say Lee Yuan Yew is a plonker you got to jail. Place might be clean whoppee **** its only the size of Lake Taupo.
Who do I believe transparency Internationale or bk t about who is the most corrupt.
You lose.

You can say whatever you like or how good NZ is, I respect your rights. From my personal experiences (which I do not wish to discuss in details here publicly), NZ is definitely not as 'clean' as some of you might think so; but certainly Singapore is although it's physical size is only as big as Lake Taupo. However, it's population is larger than NZ (am I right?).

In short, I can confidently say that Singapore has one of the most uncorrupted and efficient government in the world!

I am not trying to defend LKY, (personally, I don't agree with him in many ways) he has contributed quite a lot to the island nation, without him, probably most of Kiwis or other people in the world won't know where Singapore is! You may not like the system in Singapore, but that's the system which works for its people. What do most people want - a stable job, a roof to take shelter, food, a means of transport from point A to point B, the basic needs; and that, PAP fulfills its people with those basic needs.

As I've said many times in this forum, the oriental set of value is just different from the western model. It's not the right or wrong kind of thing - it's just that, they are different. Every country has their own unique system that works for their people. Never try to force (or expect) your system onto others - like what the USA is doing.

Please respect other cultures and values. They know what is best for their people. Outsiders, please just mind their own business.

1112626 2010-06-29 07:09:00 Lets not get petty-minded or parochial here - - Our politicians are world class for untrustworthy-ness. We also have quite a few of them, all in one relatively small chamber; which gives us some of the densest politicians on the planet too. R2x1 (4628)
