1112607 2010-06-28 01:14:00 NZ is democracy but it can go bad with MMP and a labor government in power.

You mean it did go bad.

I'd like to see our parliamenatry term extended to 4 or 5 years like most other democracies.

3 years is just too short for any party to bring in their ideas, have their budgets and get their ideas working in practice.

So you would rather they have 5 years to really stuff up before those that bother to vote get them out?

Idiot governance doesn't equal corruption. MMP is a woeful system agreed, far to much power to the small parties and there "wish lists". But our system is largely free of corruption and largely not controlled by big business.

I agree with you, Battleneter2. Unfortunately, lots of locals belief in the following equation:

USA = Democracy = Freedom = Human Rights = Good.

Yea its sad so many cant look at the big picture objectively, but we are on the Western side of the fence so I suppose its expected.

Yes I'd rather they had five years to get their policies working.

Yours is the old fashioned argument that wants to keep 3 years, which is out of line with the rest of the world.

You are welcome to go to China and debate this on the internet there.:D

Well I live in NZ, we are a true democracy, if I lived in the US that may be a option :)

The reason I said that is that the debate would not be allowed there. Their internet is filtered there.

none so blind as those who will not see

This is a joke surely, NZ is totally run by big business, we have been following right wing agendas since the early 1980's and that is just big business by another name.

Our illustrious PM is a lackey made rich by manipulating big business systems for personal gain after all, or have I misunderstood the function of the stock exchanges.

Any country is effectively a business and sure there is always influences on any government. The country need to make money to pay for all the important stuff like benefits and land claims etc!

NZ politics cannot be compared to the likes of the US, what you are arguing in on utterly other level.

We dont hold political prisoners (sorry I mean evil terrorists) for years without a trial like the US do we?. We don't have a CIA training and funding terrorists groups like they have in the past (obviosuly in the name of freedom lol).

No comparison

1112615 2010-06-28 21:18:00 A country is a country no matter what and business should be a small but necessary part of the citizens' daily activities not a raison d'etre. zqwerty (97)

No actually NZ is a true democracy unlike a China and the US, corruption here is very low, not suggesting NZ has a perfect system but its far better than most.
